RECOMMENDATION:
Approve an amendment to the classification plan reclassifying Town Engineer to Assistant Parks
and Public Works Director/Town Engineer.
BACKGROUND:
The Town of Los Gatos Personnel Rules and Regulations (Section 4.4) and the Municipal Code
(Section 2.30.925) require that amendments and revisions to the classification plan are
effective upon approval by Town Council. Typically, these changes are presented to Council for
approval as part of the formal budget adoption or through the labor negotiations process ;
however, the Town Council may consider modifications at any time.
DISCUSSION:
The Town’s classification plan is proposed to be amended to change the Town Engineer
classification to Assistant Parks and Public Works Director/Town Engineer due to increasing
complexities and depth of projects, such as North 40 and other development projects. Also, the
addition of the Transportation and Mobility Manager position last year has resulted in the
receipt of new grant funding dedicated to additional capital projects. Finally, given the scope of
responsibilities of the Department, the Town Engineer effectively functions as an Assistant

DISCUSSION (cont’d):
Director supporting the Parks and Public Works Director with key management and leadership
of the Department.
For all of these reasons, staff recommends changing the existing job title in the classification
plan to accurately reflect the current responsibilities and align the salary accordingly. The
Salary Schedule for Town Council and Management is attached (Attachment 1) reflecting the
change in job title with the revised salary range of $113,944 - $175,299.
CONCLUSION:
Staff is requesting approval of an amendment to the classification plan of the existing Town
Engineer to Assistant Parks and Public Works Director/Town Engineer to better reflect the
increased scope and complexities. The Town’s Personnel Rules and Municipal Code require
Council approval of the amendment prior to a modification of the existing classification plan.
COORDINATION:
This report has been coordinated with the Parks and Public Works Department.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Additional funding for the remainder of FY 2017/2018 in the amount $3,234 will be absorbed in
the Parks and Public Works operating budget. Future additional funding in the amount of
$14,369 will come through the annual budget process.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:
This is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is required.
