Subject: Dittos Lane Development - Comments for Oct 18 Council Meeting
Dear Mayor Spector and Members of Council,
As I see that the Ditto’s Lane property is back on the town council agenda, I am writing to
express my concerns and preferences regarding its future development. As you will recall, a
previous attempt to develop a high density, low-income housing project there was denied by
council due to concerns about the density being incompatible with the neighborhood ( and the
General Plan and current zoning ) and with the limited access to this property. At the time,
serious concerns were expressed about safety and traffic and I think those concerns have only
increased with more information about the lack of a recorded easement and increasing traffic
pressure in downtown.
Considering the limited range of compatible uses for the property and the fiscal impacts of the
town of each option, I would strongly advocate the development of affordable housing on this
site at an appropriate density and with the minimum contribution of town funds. Offering the
property at a nominal price to an organization such as Habitat for Humanity and allowing them
to build several units of below market rate housing would help the town to satisfy its
responsibilities under the RHNA, assure an appropriate development plan at the site, minimize
fiscal impact to the town and possibly allow the use of part of the property for some use with a
community benefit, such as parkland.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your service to the town in
what I am sure is often a difficult and thankless job.
Best Regards,
Chris Bevis
