CONSIDER A REQUEST TO MODIFY A PREVIOUS APPROVAL OF AN
EXCEPTION TO THE STORY POLE POLICY FOR THE PHASE 1 NORTH
FORTY DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS. APNS: 424-07-024 THROUGH
027, 031 THROUGH 037, 070, 083 THROUGH 086, 090, AND 100.
REMARKS:
The attached letters (Attachment 5) were received between 11:01 a.m. Monday April 4, 2016 and
11:00 a.m. Tuesday April 5, 2016.
The applicant has also provided additional illustrations regarding the necessary guy wires and
conflict points with the existing uses along Los Gatos Boulevard (Attachment 6). These uses
include one commercial use (Bartlett Tree Experts) and three single-family residences.
For each pole installed, three to nine guy wires are required at a distance of 23 feet from the pole
in order to properly secure the pole with the typically required netting attached. Pages 4 and 5 of
Attachment 6 illustrate the affected areas from each pole previously proposed to be installed with
the typically required netting. The red dots reflect the poles that were to be installed pursuant to
the previously approved story pole exception. The yellow dots reflect the poles that have been
installed utilizing an alternate method which uses flags instead of the typically required netting.
This technique reduces the wind load on the poles and results in fewer guy wires being required.
After reviewing this additional information staff has confirmed that safe use and access cannot
be provided to the commercial use and three single-family residences if the previously approved
exception is required to be implemented.
