RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
SUPPORTING AB 478 WHICH IMPOSES ADDITIONAL
SALES TAX ON SALE OF CIGARETTES
WHEREAS, over the course of a lifetime, breast cancer will affect 1 in every 9
women, with current projections showing that this rate will increase to 1 in 6 by the year
2000; and
WHEREAS, this year alone, it is estimated that 182,000 new cases will be
diagnosed in the U.S. with approximately 42,000 mortalities due to the disease; and
WHEREAS, current research funds budgeted for breast cancer are inadequate,
particularly in light of the large percentage of the population at risk.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Los Gatos Town Council
urges the State Legislature to impose an additional $.02 sales tax on sale of cigarettes, the
proceeds of such tax to be deposited in a fund for breast cancer research and education.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the
Town of Los Gatos, California, held on the 17th day of May, 1993 by the following vote:
