COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
JANUARY 12, 2016
MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL
LAUREL PREVETTI, TOWN MANAGER
SUBJECT: APPROVE THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY APPLICATION FOR A SIGN
PERMIT TO PLACE A TEMPORARY BANNER ON THE SOUTH-EAST CORNER
OF 106 E. MAIN STREET FACING THE CIVIC CENTER PARKING LOT
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Friends of the Library application for a sign permit to place a temporary banner on the
southeast corner of 106 E. Main Street facing the Civic Center parking lot.
BACKGROUND:
On December 1, 2015, the Town Council considered a request from the New Museum Los Gatos
(MUMU) and the Friends of the Library (Friends) to install permanent signage to the interior wings of
106 E. Main Street and 108 E. Main Street and a request for the placement of additional signage that
identifies each facility within the Civic Center.
The Town Council approved the proposal for signage that faces the Town Hall deck and directed staff to
return with options for a monument sign and unified signage that identifies each facility within the Civic
Center using a consistent design, font, and size. The Town Council also approved a request from
NUMU made at the meeting to allow a temporary banner on the exterior of 106 and 108 E. Main Street
until permanent signage is in place.
DISCUSSION:
The lease agreement with the Friends sets forth requirements for the Town Council to review and
approve the placement, construction, or maintenance of signs affixed to the buildings or to the exterior
premises, and requires the lessee to submit an application to the Community Development Department
and pay all costs associated with any application process required to obtain approval for any signs.
On December 18, 2015, the Friends submitted an application for a sign permit to affix a temporary
banner on the southeast corner of 106 E. Main Street facing the Civic Center parking lot. The banner is

SUBJECT: FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY TEMPORARY SIGN PERMIT APPLICATION
JANUARY 8, 2016
DISCUSSION (cont'd):
approximately 3 feet by 4 feet, with a black background and white text that includes both the logo and
the name Friends of the Library (Attachment 1). The proposed temporary banner complies with the
Town Code's overall square footage requirements for sign areas. The application requests that the
temporary banner be allowed until permanent signage at the Civic Center is in place.
CONCLUSION:
With the Town Council action to allow a temporary banner for NUMU on the exterior of 106 and 108 E.
Main Street, staff recommends approving this request as it is consistent with past Council action and the
temporary banner will be removed once permanent signage at the Civic Center is in place.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. The Council may choose to provide other direction.
2. The Council may choose to not approve the recommendation contained within this report.
