RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
OPPOSING AB 1776 (McCLINTOCK - ELIMINATION OF VEHICLE LICENSE FEE)
WHEREAS, municipalities have traditionally relied upon the property tax and the
vehicle license fee which is an in -lieu property tax on vehicles; and

WHEREAS, property taxes are progressive in that people of lesser means pay a lower
WHEREAS, the State of California has historically taken traditionally local revenues
for its own purposes for example the liquor license fee, highway carriers' business tax, financial
aid to local agencies, business inventory tax, and cigarette tax; and
WHEREAS, the vehicle license fee represents approximately $1 billion yearly in
local revenues for local services and more than $1 million yearly to Los Gatos; and
WHEREAS, vehicles require expensive government services to support their uses
(namely streets, parking, traffic enforcement, and traffic signals); and
WHEREAS, the loss of vehicle license fees will dramatically impact local services,
especially public safety services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that unless an equally progressive and
certain revenue source with comparable growth potential can be absolutely guaranteed to backfill
the loss of vehicle license fee revenues, that the Town of Los Gatos vigorously opposes any
reduction or elimination of vehicle license fee revenues.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the Town
of Los Gatos, California, held on the 1st day of June, 1998 by the following vote:
