Fwd: Mobile Crisis Team
Hello Council Members,
I hope you had a wonderful week.
Below is an excerpt from a message that was sent to me earlier today about county grant monies related to
mental health:
Santa Clara County recently announced its plans for 2016's "Millionaire's Tax" monies. At the announcement
meeting, our Behavioral Health Director revealed that the County has identified funds (Medi- Cal payments for
consumers who were previously uninsured) which could be used to pay for two mobile crisis team units.
Many counties in California (including San Francisco and Los Angeles) have mobile crisis teams which provide
psychiatric assessment and, sometimes, stabilization to individuals within their own homes and in other sites
out in the community. (see httn: / /www.esmonitor comlUSA /Iusticel2Ol5 /0615 /In- Losa national
model -for- how -to- police- the - menially -ill )
Currently, in SCC, police respond to mental health- related calls without the assistance of a mental health
professional. Although some officers have received training in identification ofpossihle mental health issues,
they lack the expertise of a professional. The "costs" of this lack of support are many: preventable officer -
involved shootings; increased risk of injury to the officers, themselves; increased legal exposure to the County;
as well o Caltricant track, public disturbance when, example, a suicide or threatened suicide takes place on a
freeway or Caltrain track, etc.
Adopting a suicide prevention policy could be one way to bring attention to the suicide crisis in Los Gatos, and
possibly lead to grant dollars from the County for additional training and resources.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Take care,
Chris Miller
