Re: Funding Appeal - the Arts & Culture Commission
RECEIVED
MAY 15 2015
TOWN MANAGER
We wish to appeal the decision made at the recent Los Gatos Arts Commission meeting held on March
18th, 2015.
The appeal is based on the following factors
• The proposed funding level for FY 2015 -16 for our organization is 25% lower than last year's amount
($4000 reduced to $3000). This comes at a time when school enrollment numbers are increasing and
our services are more in demand in our local schools. Going back a few years (to 2008) the annual
funding level was $5000. As such, we've seen an overall funding decline of 40 %.
• The Art Docents of Los Gatos provide provide educational services. We teach to, and are an integral
part of, the District's curriculum. We do this by visiting each school approximately 150 times each
academic year. This amounts to over 1600 hours of volunteer time each year to nearly 3000 students
• We serve the following schools - Blossom Hill Elementary, Louise Van Meter Elementary, Daves
Avenue Elementary, and Lexington Elementary in grades K - 5. We also provide classes at R.J.
Fisher Middle School.
• The Art Docents of Los Gatos has proudly served our local schools continuously for over 40 years
• While we do receive funding grants from the LGEF, we have to secure additional funding each year.
This is always a precarious situation.
• The importance of the work performed by the Docents is evidenced in the letter of support from the
Superintendent of the Los Gatos Union School District (see attached).
We sincerely ask that you restore our funding to $4000 for FY 2015 -16.

RE. • Letter of Sapportfor the Art Docents of Los Gatos
It is my pleasure to write this letter of support on behalf of the Art Docents of Los Gatos who serve
over 3,300 students in the Los Gatos Union School District ( "District"), which includes Daves
Avenue Elementary School, Blossom Hill Elementary School, Louise Van Meter Elementary,
Lexington Elementary School, and R.J. Fisher Middle School. As the Superintendent of Schools, I
have personally observed the Art Docents work with children, plan lessons and work
collaboratively with our colleagues and parents to enhance the District's visual and performing arts
programs.
Over the years, the Art Docents has been an integral part of the District's Strategic Plan focused on
developing the whole child with a well - rounded curriculum. The Art Docents are not only creative,
enthusiastic, and gifted volunteers but we they are collaborative and well liked by our students.
They have established positive working relationships with the faculty and administration and can be
seen throughout our District on a regular basis.
I believe the Art Docent's commitment to arts education, upbeat attitude and genuine interest in fine
arts allow for a unique partnership with our schools to bring new and creative projects to the
students. We are very proud that they annually host a Student Art Show featuring more than 2,000
pieces of art from students in the District. The exhibit showcases artwork from every student in
kindergarten through 5th grade and some art from 6th through 8th grade students. The collection of
work includes drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures and other creative projects created by
students.
In closing, the Art Docents of Los Gatos are an integral part of the District's strategic plan to
educating the whole child where student benefit from this unique program offered in partnership
with parents and community support. If you have any questions, or desire any additional
information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, 01^aL
Diana G. Abbati, Ed.D.
