SUBJECT: APPOINTMENTS TO BOARDS, COMMISSIONS, AND COMMITTEES
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I. Conduct an appointment process for the following: Arts & Culture Commission,
Community and Senior Services Commission, Library Board, Parks Commission, Personnel
Board, Planning Commission, and Transportation and Parking.
2. Direct the Interim Clerk Administrator to re- advertise any vacant positions following the
appointments on December 16, 2013 OR to include the vacant positions in the annual
recruitment in Fall 2014.
DISCUSSION:
On December 9, 2013, Council interviewed applicants for vacant board, commission, and
committee positions. Attached is a list of the advisory bodies, the number of vacancies, and the
applicants' names.
Several incumbents were not available for the interviews; however, Council may consider them
for reappointment if desired, as has been past practice. The incumbents included:
• Dennise Carter, Arts and Culture Commission. Ms. Carter is providing full -time care for
her father who recently had open heart surgery.
• Tom Atkinson, Library Board. Mr. Atkinson had a family engagement scheduled before
the commission interviews were rescheduled to December 9.
• Sandy Gordon, Transportation and Parking Commission. Ms. Gordon had to move out of
her home due to water damage, and was dealing with alternative living arrangements and
contractors.
One applicant, Garrett Kolb, did not appear for the interviews, and Council has decided to not
consider him for appointment, but to invite him to apply again in the future.

Council may appoint applicants to the vacant positions. Council is not obligated to appoint
applicants even if there are remaining vacancies. It requires a majority vote of the Council to
appoint an applicant to a position.
Upon completion of the appointment process, Council may direct the Interim Clerk
Administrator to re- advertise any vacant commission positions or to include the vacant positions
in the annual recruitment in Fall 2014. The Town moved to conducting recruitments on an
annual basis several years ago, except if commissions did not have sufficient members to
conduct business throughout the year.
CONCLUSION:
It is recommended that Council appoint applicants to fill vacant Town board, commission, and
committee positions and direct the Interim Clerk Administrator to re- advertise any unfilled
positions or to include the vacant positions in the annual recruitment in Fall 2014.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action.

Hi Shelley,
Thank you for coordinating last night's interviews with Jackie. I appreciate meeting others who serve
our community on other commissions.
I need to correct one statement I made to the council regarding the Needs Assessment "survey
monkey ". I stated this was going out to the community, however, was not specific that it was going to
the service providers to measure their services to the needs of Los Gatos residents. The impression was
given that it was going out to the citizens. That will come later.
My biggest accomplishment is serving as the conduit in the Sourscewise Advisory Meetings and other
information "need to know" from the Aging Services Collaborative and other non - profit organizations to
the commissioners that you so gratefully forward for me.
