Letter from applicant (one page), received January 17, 2012 Distribution cc: Mark Robson, Santa Clara Development, 2185 The Alameda, Suite 150, San Jose, CA 95126 WRR:SD :cgt R E C VE Vp E D JAN January 17, 2012 Dear Mayor and Councilmembers, TOWN OF LOS €'3 /kTos PLANNING DIVISION This letter is to request that the Town approves the name, "Grant Bishop Lane ", in recognition of Mr. Grant Bishop, for the private street within the new residential development at 16213 Los Gatos Blvd. Mr. Grant Bishop was an area resident and former property owner of this site. As the owner of several car dealerships in Los Gatos and the surrounding area, he was a "pioneer" in Santa Clara County's retail automobile industry. As automobile dealerships have historically had a significant influence in the economy, development, and character of the Town of Los Gatos, it is fitting that one of its early leaders be recognized in this manner. It is also appropriate to name the street after Mr. Bishop due to his many contributions to the community, his historical connection with the property, and his life -long love of the area. Mr. Bishop attended Santa Clara University and the Santa Clara University School of Law and served in World War II as a distinguished naval aviator. Following the war, he did not practice law, but instead, focused his interpersonal skills, analytic abilities, and entrepreneurial drive in the business of automobile sales and opened his first car dealership in Morgan Hill. He later moved to Los Gatos and opened Grant Bishop Chevrolet on North Santa Cruz Avenue. Later, he became involved in other dealerships with his longtime friend and business partner, Ted Stevens. He went on to establish the first dealership on Los Gatos Blvd., which in later years attracted other dealers to "the Boulevard." Mr. Bishop's history with the 16213 Los Gatos Blvd, site is as follows: The first car dealership on the site, Dodge, was established by another owner in the late 1960's. Ted Stevens later purchased the property including the dealership and auto repair shop. Eventually, Mr. Bishop took ownership of the site following a property trade with Mr. Stevens and consolidated the main parcel with the adjoining parcel (containing the existing southern parking lot areas) to comprise the current 1.9 acres. The last dealership to operate on the site was South Bay Honda. Mr. Bishop was a well- respected businessman in the community. He was active in many business and community organizations, including the Rotary and Lions Club. He supported numerous charitable organizations and was an original founder of Ming Quong in Los Gatos, which later merged to become Eastfield Ming Quong. He also was a founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints on Rose Ave. He enjoyed golf and was an active member of the La Rinconada Country Club. According to his wife, Margaret, he loved to sing and play the saxophone. He also loved to travel, and in 1963, was a member of the first delegation of United States business executives to be guests of the U.S.S.R. Mr. Bishop always considered Los Gatos- Monte Sereno to be his home. He loved the area and felt it was the best place on Earth to live. He passed away in 2005, leaving the property to his wife, Margaret Bishop. I know that it would be greatly appreciated by Margaret and the family to have the private street named "Grant Bishop Lane" in his memory.
