AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING FOUR (4) STRUCTURES, ONE
(1) LANDMARK. AND ONE (1) SITE AS HISTORICALLY AND
CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT.
The Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos does ordain as
follows:
SECTION 1.
The following structures, landmark and site are hereby
designated historically and culturally significant:

Property: Macabee Gopher Trap Manufacturing Company building -
110 Loma Alta Avenue

Description of Item(s) Designated: The exterior of the wooden
structure.
Description of the characteristics which Justify the designation:
This Eastlake -style wood frame one-story home containing five rooms
and a basement is an historic home which has been converted to com-
mercial use. The house, built in 1894 as a first residence for
Zephyr and Elizabeth Macabee, served later as a workshop where the
Macabee Gopher Trap was invented and patented in 1900. The home
has remained in the Macabee family and is owned by the Macabee
heirs: Mr. Raymond Macabee (62 Broadway), Mrs. Lanty B. Evans
(81 Reservoir Road) and Mrs. Don Hobbie (of Oroviile).
The gopher traps have been manufactured here for the past
seventy -five years with a wide distributorship in the Western
States and occasional orders sent to the East Coast and foreign
markets.

Property: Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad - Vasona -Oak Meadow Parks

Description of Item(s) Designated: Trains, exterior of station
and other railroad buildings.
Description of the characteristics which justify the designation:
Engine #2 built in 1905 by John Coit, and Engine #2 built in 1901,
also built by John Coit. Engine #2 for the East Lake Railroad in
Los Angeles, and Engine #3 was built for the Venice Miniature Rail-
road, Venice, California. All cars and coaches are from the
Panama - Pacific Exposition of 1915.
Reassembled by Billy Jones, starting in 1941 on Daves Avenue.
Ran from 1948 until his death in 1968. Purchased and relocated
in the park area by the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, Inc. (non-
profit organization), July 26, 1970.
Irreplacable asset to the Town, providing for this and future gen-
erations examples of the physical surroundings in which past
generations lived. And, the promotion of tourist trade and interest.

Description of Item(s) Designated: The exterior of the wooden
structure.
Description of the characteristics which Justify the designation:
Good example of Italianate style, has window latches dated 1860,
picture in library dated 1870. In Los Gatos Tax Records of 1886.
This style t1:§ characterized by straight front of building with no
sizable projections or recessions, the tops of the windows are
rounded. This has interesting use of siding, both vertical and
horizontal, and the oornice, which makes the roof low profile to
the spectator on the street level.
Built for the Waterman family circa 1870; preserved over the years
and remodeled several times. Was an art gallery at one time.

Property: Coggeshall Mansion - 115 North Santa Cruz Avenue

Description of Item(s) Designated: The exterior of the structure.
Description of the characteristics which justify tl•ie designation:
Almost c4assic example of Nineteenth Century Eastlake Victorian with
the distinctive type of ornamentation that is the major character-
istic of this style. Open front porch, tower, rows of spindles,
and woodwork resembling furniture legs. Other distinguishing char -
acteristics are the rectangular shape of the building, and the gab;]:¢
roof .
This building was build by J. J. Mill as a residence for mfrs. Mary G.
Coggeshall in 1891. It was converted into a mortuary in 1920 by
Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Place, and has been used as such until 1974.
This old mansion is the only one left of ail the lovely big homes
that graced the west side of Santa Cruz Avenue. At one time
(turn of the century), from Saratoga Avenue all the way to Main Street
that side of the street was lined with these (Bean, Nicholson, etc.)
with the trolley line turning off of Saratoga Avenue, down Santa
Cruz Avenue and then on the Main Street. They have all been
demolished, but this one.

Property: The Pratt House - 16920 Farley Road

Description of Item(s) Designated: The exteriors of main house,
guest house, barn, and outdoor privy.
Description of the characteristics which justify the designation:
The guest house and main house are constructed of single wall virgin
redwood with the door and window frames projecting on the inside
walls. The house on Farley Road, formerly the Lexington -New Almaden
Road, was constructed in the .:late 1840's or 1850's on the bluff above
the original Hernandez Adobe on the Los Gatos Creek and was probably
a squatters cabin. Eventually the property came into the possession
of J. Y. McMillin, one of the owners of the Los Gatos Manufacturing
Co. in the 1860'x. In the 1880's the 110 acres was sold to Eugene
L. Pratt, an ordhardist and railroad engineer on the Southern
Pacific Railroad, and remained in the family until his death in 1939,
when it was sold to a Mr. Herndon who lived there until 1942 when
Mr. Thomas Knight and his wife purchased the house. After Mr.
Knight's death, Mrs. Knight remarried and lives with her husband
Mr. Harley C. Watson on this property.
Note: As of 1939 the house had no running water, electricity,
gas, telephone or sewage connections.

SECTION 7.
The property listed is designated to be of historic, archi -
tectural, or aesthetic significance for the reasons listed below.
Property: Site of the University Avenue School - 50 University
Avenue.
Historic Designation No. HD -75 -8
Classification (structure or landmark): Landmark, site
Description of Item(s) Designated: Site only, no buildings.
Description of the characteristics which justify the designation:
Property was a school site in Los Gatos since 1885. At one time
(1893 -1908) was both grammer and high school.
First school opened August 8, 1881, added to in 1885, another
addition for a high school in 1895, another addition in 1916.
Building demolished and a ndw one built in 1923. Original two -
floor school built in 1923 modeled after the early California -
Spanish mission of San Juan Capistrano. School abandoned in 1961.
Sold in 1964 and converted into a Fine Arts Center housing more
than 50 shops and restaurants and is the home of California
Actors Theatre.

SECTION 8.
The Town Clerk shall attest to the adoption of this Ordinance.
This Ordinance shall be published once in the Los Gatos Times -
Saratoga Observer, a newspaper of general circulation, printed and
published in the Town of Los Gatos within fifteen (15) days of its
final passage and this Ordinance shall take effect thirty (30)
days following its final passage.
The above and foregoing Ordinance was duly and regularly intro-
duced at a meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos
h e l d on the 17th day of _ November , 1975 .
PASSED AND ADOPTED as an Ordinance of the Town of Los Gatos,
California, at a regular meeting of the Town Council held on the
