AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING A STRUCTURE AS HISTORICALLY
AND CULTURALLY 5(QNIFICANT,
The Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos does ordain as
follows;
SECTION 1 ,
The following structure is hereby designated historically and
culturally significant;
10-75 -1 Market Street School - 179 Lorna Alta Avenue
A detailed description of the designated structure, the characteristics
which ,justify designation, and a map showing the location and delineation
of the historic site, are part of this Ordinance,

The property listed is designated to be of historic, archi-
tectural, or aesthetic significance for the reasons listed below.

Description of Item(s) Designated: The exterior of the wooden structure.
Description of the characteristics which Justify the designation:
This Victorian -style wood frame one-story home containing five rooms
and a basement is an historic .h ome, which was 'converted into a one -.
room school house, and was known as the "Market Street School" from
approximately 1894 to 1917. The first and second grades were taught
here. One of Peter Johnso O s sisters was an early teacher. There
were a number of such primary schools in and about Los Gatos in the
early days. The Vineland School at 269 Los Gatos 'Boulevard is the
only other known structure of its type still in existence. The property
Is presently owned by the occupants, Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Ray.
Apparently, title was never In the School District, the one room being
]eased for school purposes. Loma Alta Avenue was formerly known as
"Market Street ".

SECTION 3,
The Town Clerk shall attest to the adoption of this Ordinance,
This Ordinance shall be published once In the Los Gatos Times -
Saratoga Observer, a newspaper of general circulation, printed and
published in the Town of Los Gatos within fifteen (l5) days of its
final passage and this Ordinance shall take effect thirty (30)
days following its final passage.
The above and foregoing Ordinance was duly and regularly intro-
duced at a meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos
held on the 5 th day of January —, 197 .
