AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING A LANDMARK AS
HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT
THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS DOES ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1.
The following landmark is hereby designated historically and
culturally significant:
HD -76 -3 Rex Hotel - 31 East Main Street
A detailed description of the designated landmark, the characteristics
which justify designation, and a map showing the location and delineation of
the historic site, are part of this ordinance.
SECTION 2.
The property listed is designated to be historic, architectural, or
aesthetic significance for the reasons listed below.
A. Property: Rex Hotel, 31 East Main Street
B. Historic Designation No.: HD -76 -3
C. Description of Designation: Landmark
D. Description of characteristics which justify designation:
After the fire of 1891, which destroyed most of East Main Street,
a new brick building, known as the Beckwith Block was constructed.
This Later became the Rex Hotel, and, in its early days, housed
the Post Office and other business establishments. The fire of
1901 damaged the rear of the building, but otherwise, Left it
intact. It is still used as a hotel, the Last of all the old
hotels in town.
E. Description of particular features that should be preserved in
addition to items covered under section 4.86.120:

SECTION 3.
The Town Clerk shall attest to the adoption of this ordinance.
This ordinance shall be published once in the Los Gatos Times - Saratoga
Observer, a newspaper of general circulation, printed and published in
the Town of Los Gatos within fifteen (15) days of its final passage and
this ordinance shall take effect thirty (30) days following its final
passage.
The above and foregoing ordinance was duly and regularly introduced
at a meeting of the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos held on the
18th day of April , 1977•
PASSED AND ADOPTED as a ordinance of the Town of Los Gatos,
California, at a regular meeting of the Town Council held on the
2nd day of May 1977, by the following
vote:
