SUBJECT: APPROVE THE EXTENSION OF THE APPOINTMENT OF PARTHENIA M. HICKS,
LOS GATOS POET LAUREATE, FROM AN END DATE OF APRIL 4, 2012 TO
DECEMBER 31, 2012
RECOMMENDATION Approve the extension of the appointment term for Parthenia M. Hicks, Los
Gatos Poet Laureate, from an end date of April 4, 2012, to December 31, 2012.
BACKGROUND In 2009 the Library Board received a recommendation from the Town Council to
begin the process for appointment of a Poet Laureate for the Town of Los Gatos. In January, 2010 the
Town Council approved the process, and on March 30, 2010, Parthenia M. Hicks was appointed to serve
a two year term, from April 5, 2010 — April 4, 2012.
DISCUSSION The initial appointment of the poet laureate was made to coincide with the construction
and opening timeline of the new Los Gatos Library. Making the term of this appointment consistent
with the calendar year better accommodates year -long activities that can involve future poet laureates,
and it is more efficient to manage a calendar year appointment in the same manner as all other Town
boards and commissions.
CONCLUSION Extend the appointment of Parthenia M. Hicks, Los Gatos Poet Laureate, to end on
December 31, 2012.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is
required.
FISCAL IMPACT Is not expected to have fiscal impact.
