05 Staff Report - Donation from Yamagami's NurseryN F cos eQ~~oS COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT DATE: December 5, 2008 MEETING DATE: 12/15/08 ITEM NO: TO: MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL FROM: GREG LARSON, TOWN MANAGER" ~f SUBJECT: ACCEPT DONATION FROM YAMAGAMI'S NURSERY FOR 100 "SILICON VALLEY DIAMOND" ROSES AND APPROVE THE PLACEMENT OF A 4"X 7" PLAQUE. RECOMMENDATION: Accept donation from Yamagami's Nursery for 100 Silicon Valley Diamond Roses and approve the placement of up to a 4"-x 7" plaque. BACKGROUND: Yamagami's Nursery in Cupertino has had a long standing business in Silicon Valley for many years. In honor of their 601h anniversary, they have acquired hundreds of Silicon Valley Diamond Roses. As a way of saying thank you to the communities who have supported them over the years, Yamagami's is offering to donate up to 100 roses, including the organic soil amendments, to every city/town in Silicon Valley. DISCUSSION: The Silicon Valley Diamond Rose is a small plant, roughly 18" x 18" and works well for massing in a landscape or used in borders. Staff estimates that the Town can accommodate approximately 100 of the roses. The area in front of Town Hall where existing rose bushes currently bloom is a good area to plant approximately 20 of these roses, Town staff has approached the Beautification Committee and they welcome the opportunity to plant the remaining rose bushes (approximately 80) around the Town, including in planter boxes downtown and other areas in need of beautification. The Committee will maintain and care for the newly planted roses, with the exception of the roses at Town Hall, which will be maintained by Town staff. The Council's Solicitation and Donation Policy specifies that the plaque shall not exceed 8" x 10." In this case, a 4" x 7" plaque would be appropriate. Consistent with the policy, staff suggests the wording on the plaque be "The Town of Los Gatos recognizes Yamagami's Nursery for their donation of Silicon Valley Diamond Roses." CONCLUSION: Staff recommends that Council accept the donation of 100 Silicon Valley Diamond Roses from Yamagami's Nursery and approve the placement of an 4" x 7" plaque near the roses at Town Hall. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: Is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is required. FISCAL IMPACT: The value of the roses is estimated at $1,800. The plaque will not exceed $300. Maintenance costs for the bushes in front of Town Hall will be absorbed through the Parks and Public Works operating budget. Attachments: None Distribution: General
