04 Staff Report - Equipment Donation to Los Gatos Police DepartmentSOWN 0 !ps G A~ S DATE: TO: FROM: SUBJECT COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT April 15, 2008 MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL MEETING DATE: 4/21/08 ITEM NO: GREG LARSON, TOWN MANAGER ADOPT RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO ACCEPT A DONATION FROM THE LOS GATOS POLICE FOUNDATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $9,800 FOR A COMPACT RADIO TRANSMITTER & RECEIVER, AN UNDERCOVER LAPTOP COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE. RECOMMENDATION: Adopt resolution authorizing the Town Manager to accept a donation from the Los Gatos Police Foundation in the amount of $9,800 for a compact radio transmitter & receiver, an undercover laptop computer and software. BACKGROUND: Over the past several years, the Los Gatos Police Foundation has received private donations and conducted several fund raising events with funds specifically designated for the purchase of supplies and equipment for the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department and its four volunteer groups. DISCIISSI0N- Currently, the police investigations bureau does not have a compact transmitter to use for covert operations or investigations. The transmitter would need to have a receiver in order to record the transmissions. By having this equipment, the department would broaden its ability to conduct covert and sensitive investigations. Upon approval of the resolution, the Los Gatos Police Foundation will donate the funds to the Police Department. The cost of the transmitter is $3,700. The cost of the receiver is $4,200. The laptop has been priced at $1500 and the software package is $400. The total value of the donation is $9,800. CONCLUSION: Staff recommends that Council approve the resolution and accept this donation. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: This is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is required. FISCAL IMPACT: Ongoing costs for maintenance will be minimal and will be absorbed in the Police Department's existing budget. Attachments-, Resolution RESOLUTION RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO ACCEPT A DONATION FROM THE LOS GATOS POLICE FOUNDATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $9,800 FOR A COMPACT RADIO TRANSMITTER, RADIO RECEIVER, UNDERCOVER LAPTOP COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE WHEREAS, the Los Gatos Police Foundation desires to donate funds to the Police Department with which the Police Department wishes to purchase a compact radio transmitter, radio receiver, an undercover laptop computer and software; and WHEREAS, the Police Department has specified that the donated funds be used to purchase the compact radio transmitter, radio receiver, an undercover laptop computer and software; and WHEREAS, the Police Department will receive a donation from the Los Gatos Police Foundation which will cover all costs for the compact radio transmitter, radio receiver, undercover laptop computer and software, estimated at $9,800. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos, County of Santa Clara, State of California, that the Town Manager is authorized to accept a donation from the Los Gatos Police Foundation for the purpose of purchasing a compact radio transmitter, radio receiver, undercover laptop computer and software.
