SUBJECT: ADOPT RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE INTERIM TOWN MANAGER
TO ACCEPT A DONATION FROM THE LOS GATOS POLICE
FOUNDATION IN THE AMOUNT OF $8,000.00 TO BE USED TOWARDS
THE PURCHASE AND TRAINING OF A GENERAL PURPOSE CANINE
AND THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE CANINE.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt resolution authorizing the Interim Town Manager to accept a donation from the Los Gatos
Police Foundation in the amount of $8,000.00 to be used towards the purchase and training of a
general purpose canine and the equipment needed to support the canine.
BACKGROUND:
Over the past several years, the Los Gatos Police Foundation has received private donations
designated for the purchase of general purpose canines and the necessary equipment to support
those canines. The Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department has had two general purpose
canines retire from duty this year. This leaves the department with one active general purpose
canine. Recently, the Society Dog organization donated $8,000.00 to the Los Gatos Police
Foundation. This donation, obtained through fund-raising events, was made to purchase a new
general purpose canine and to provide training and necessary equipment.
DISCUSSION:
During the last year, the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department has had two active canine
units retire from duty. Currently, the department has one active canine unit working in patrol.
Canine units possess unique capabilities that are a benefit to the community and to patrol. Only

equipment which can still be used. A large portion of the equipment and training that canine
teams receive originates from donations made to the Police Foundation for that purpose. The
police department is currently budgeted for this position and the donation will assist in
supplementing the program.
CONCLUSION:
Staff recommends that Council adopt a resolution to accept this donation.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:
Is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is required.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The donated funds are one-time funds, which will not have an on-going impact on the
department budget.
$8,000.00 will be deposited into revenue account # 4030-48745,
The funds will be expended from one of three different expenditure accounts, as needed, to
support the canine program:

RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
AUTHORIZING THE INTERIM TOWN MANAGER TO ACCEPT AN $8,000.00
DONATION FROM THE LOS GATOS POLICE FOUNDATION TO BE USED TOWARDS
THE PURCHASE OF A GENEARAL PURPOSE CANINE AND THE EQUIPMENT

WHEREAS, the Los Gatos Police Foundation has donated funds to the Police
Department to purchase a general purpose canine and equipment; and,
WHEREAS, the Police Department will receive an $8,000.00 donation from the Los
Gatos Police Foundation which will assist to cover the cost of the general purpose canine and the
equipment needed to support the canine;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos,
County of Santa Clara, State of California, that the Interim Town Manager is authorized to accept a
donation from the Los Gatos Police Foundation for the purpose of purchasing a general purpose
canine and the equipment needed to support the canine for the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police
Department.
