ADOPT RESOLUTION FOR NATIONAL ARBOR DAY PROCLAMATION
AND ANNUAL OBSERVANCE
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt resolution for National Arbor Day proclamation and annual observance.
BACKGROUND:
The Town annually observes National Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony. Recognition of
National Arbor Day is also a requirement for the "Tree City USA" award. The Town has
received the "Tree City U.S.A." award 27 years in a row from the National Arbor Day
Foundation. The "Tree City U.S.A." Program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day
Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the Department
of Forestry. The award is anticipated this year, but delayed due to late application processing.
DISCUSSION:
The Town's commitment to preserve and enhance our urban forest is evidenced by the Town's
continued support of the following specific standards: adoption and enforcement of a tree
ordinance; a comprehensive Urban Forestry Program; annual observance of Arbor Day; and the
existence of the Parks Commission as a legal tree governing body.
