SUBJECT: ADOPT A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO
ACCEPT THE DONATION OF AN OIL PAINTING BY ARTIST LAURNA
MERRIELL OF THE LYNDON HOTEL DONATED BY JOHN AND JANE
KELLY
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a resolution authorizing the Town Manager to accept the donation of an oil painting by artist
Laurna Merriell of the Lyndon Hotel donated by John and Jane Kelly.
BACKGROUND:
Laurna Merriell was a member of the Los Gatos Art League in the 1960s and 1970s who often
exhibited her paintings in the town plaza, across from the, Hotel Lyndon. When it became evident
in early 1963 that the landmark hotel would soon be demolished, Ms. Merriell spent days in the plaza
creating a painting to help preserve the memory of a building which for nearly 64 years had played
an important role in the culture of the community.
DTSC:TTSgT0 N:
The Hotel Lyndon opened on June 1, 1899, constructed mostly of redwood from James Lyndon's
lumber yard. Each of its 60 rooms was elegantly furnished and carpeted. The lady's parlor had easy
chairs, paintings and a piano. The gentlemen's sitting room featured Navajo artwork and rugs.
Many people who arrived in Los Gatos by train remembered spending their first night at the Lyndon,
and enj oyed the spacious gardens at the rear of the building. When her painting of Hotel Lyndon was
finished, artist Laurna Merriell's husband John made the frame and the art work was presented as
a gift to John and Jane Kelly. The Kellys now seek to pass the painting on to the Town of Los Gatos,
to help preserve the image of an important part of its history.
