SOS ent°S COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
DATE: FEBRUARY 9, 2006
TO: MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL
FROM: DEBRA J. FIGONE, TOWN MANAGER
SUBJECT: ADOPT RESOLUTION APPROVING AMENDED MASTER TREE LIST
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt resolution (Attachment 1) approving amended Master Tree List (Attachment 2).
BACKGROUND:
The Parks Commission during 2005 discussed the current tree list as shown in the Town Code. This
tree list is not in tune with the current approach in horticulture and tree management. The Parks
Commission requested that John Bourgeois, one of the Commission members and an expert in the
field of horticulture, spearhead the effort in updating this tree list.
DISCUSSION:
Park Commissioners John Bourgeois and Jim Sugai had meetings and discussions with the Town
Arborist and other staff to edit the Town's list of approved street trees. After much discussion, a
revised street tree list was developed. While forming the list, the group considered trees that are
indigenous to California, whose roots are non-invasive to property (e.g., sidewalks, curb, gutter, and
sewer lines), and which are not a fire hazard, therefore, expanding the original Master Tree List and
giving a wider range of choices. This list was presented to the Parks Commission for consideration
at its regular meeting on February 7, 2006. After reviewing the draft Master Tree List, discussing the
Town guidelines for street trees, and editing the draft list, the Commission voted to accept the Master
Tree List with the changes made by the Parks Commissioners and for this list to be presented to the
Town. Council for approval and incorporation in the Town Code.
