L Why are you interested in serving on the Community Services Commission? I believe
in the process of local -government and commissions like this one that epitomize democracy
at its best and offer a place in which citizens can propose action, voice opinions and make a
difference in the lives of people in the community. My motivation is to contribute to the
Town of Los Gatos where I can and learn more about the inner workings of the local
process.
2. What kind of fund-raising activities have you participated in? Previously as a member
of the Board of Directors of the Quito Little League and the San Jose State Alumni
Association, I participated in or led teams that managed the budgeting and fund-raising
efforts. As a parent, I've participated over the years in various fiord raising activities for my
children's school and sports activities. Currently I lead a group of volunteer "moms" for the
Frosh-Soph Football team at Los Gatos,High School which includes the collection and
handling of funds to support the team.
3. What experience have you had with non-profit agencies? I've spent most my career in
the "for profit" sector so my experience with non-profit agencies is relatively minor,
however as the treasurer for the Quite Little League (a Section 501(c3 non-profit
organization I helped to ensure that the League complied with various non-profit rules and
regulations for handling funds and paving taxes.
4. Please describe any experience you have with grant writing and grant application
review process? I participated on a team of "Grant Readers" for the The Sun Microsystems
Foundation, Inc. a separate non-profit charitable organization funded by contributions from
my employer. This entailed review of various grant proposals and culminated in
recommendations to the selection committee of the Foundation Board of Directors. In
addition, I have participated on the "Public Policy Forum" within Sun. This is a cross-
functional group within Sun that interfaces with various local and federal government
agencies as well as technolou forums.
5. Have you ever attended a Community Services Commission meeting? No, the next
one is scheduled for January 2006 therefore I was not able to attend a meeting. However
this week I had the opportunity to speak with one of the current members of the
Commission about the Commission's work as an advisory body to the Town Council on
matters of public service within the Town of Los Gatos. If so, please provide a summary of
your observation of the meeting. Not applicable at this time.
6. What community needs would you like to specifically address? Generally I'd like to
learn more about the process of local government in the Town of Los Gatos, the flow of
funds and the different agencies that operate within the community, specifically I am
interested in issues related to the General Plan and land use (ems. parks, open space, the
environment) sports and -youth activities affordable housing; in addition, I would like to
participate on various grant review projects.
