Town Manager. Town of Los Gatos council members.
I wish the Roberts Road bridge to be reopened. My belief is that
there is no such term as Local Historic, only State historic or
Federal Historic. Therefore Roberts road bridge is only a local
bridge. There is a very easy and inexpensive way to have the bridge
opened for our neighborhood. Place restrictive height and width
barriers, so only cars can pass through thus giving us access to our
neighborhood.
Please reconsider your past action and give us back this bridge.

To the Mayor and Town Council Members of Los Gatos,
Based on a report prepared by the Parks and Public Works Department, we understand
the Roberts Road Bridge is not a historic bridge by Federal and state guidelines. We
understand that the Town can give the bridge historic status, but that does not help in
getting outside funds to repair the bridge. In reading this new report, we see there are
things that were not addressed in this report that we believe should have been.
One item not mentioned in the report was the completion of an environmental review and
ordinance approval of the Vasona Heights subdivision (now known as Los Gatos Glen)
which was done 10 years ago. This ordinance was approved by the Town of Los Gatos.
The ordinance stated, that the developer (Summerhill Homes) that a condition of the
subdivision approval was keeping the bridge open to traffic. Other conditions included
the developer requirement to supply a signal light at Blossom Hill Road and various
improvements to Blossom Hill Road.
In a previous report presented by the Town on May 2nd it was stated in a report that the
bridge could remain open to traffic for an extended period of time if there were vehicle
weight controls. The Town had signs placed at the bridge in attempt to stop large trucks
from driving over the bridge. It was suggested that the Town put up poles like they do at
parking garages to stop large vehicle from driving through. The Town's feeling was it
would cost too much to do. We were told by a contractor to construct the parking-garage-
type poles the cost would be around 10 to 15 thousand dollars. This would seem to be a
reasonable and modest cost solution.
If the Town council decides giving the bridge a historic designation, the Town will not
receive any grants or funding from the state or Federal source. Having the weight
bearing deterrent provided by the parking-garage-type poles would give the town the time
to further work on outside funding, while allowing the bridge to remain open. This bridge
can no longer be ignored. If the town wishes to make this a historic bridge and spend tax
payer money in making this happen, the Town voters and neighborhood residents should
be informed and allowed to vote on such a decision.
The other option is to let Caltrans pay to replace the bridge at a minimal cost to the
Town. We can create a bridge with the same appeal and charm the Town believes it
currently projects. Keep it as a one lane bridge and commemorate its history with plaque
describing its long history. This would be a more meaningful, not to mention favorable,
legacy for this Town Council to leave the residents of Los Gatos.

Kim Gavin, Peter Littman and Tassia Babalis
