How would you contribute as a Commission member to achieving these accomplishments as well as additional Commission projects? Page 2 of 2 I will answer the 4 questions posed on the application, but thought I'd offer a perspective on why I want to join the Transportation and Parking Commission: I've been a resident of Los Gatos for nearly 10 years. I've been a driver in Santa Clara County for 25 years, and bicycled extensively throughout the area for about the same amount of time. I've seen the Valley grow exponentially over that time span, and watched as government agencies have tried valiantly to build and improve transportation infrastructure to meet the increased demands of our residents. Transportation-related issues comprise a large part of the "quality of life" in Silicon Valley - a hot topic we speak about frequently at get-togethers, business meetings and around the dinner table. i want to contribute to making our local community a better place to live, and that's why I want to be part of the Transportation and Parking Commission. I have been an electronics industry executive for the past 25 years, including stints as executive vice president at chipmaker LSI Logic, and as CEO of a chip startup called Siliquent Technologies. Prior to these positions, I was a business. reporter and columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, where I had a ringside- seat to watch the explosive growth of the Valley in the early 1980s. With my background in the electronics industry, I have run divisions with several hundred million dollars in revenues, and managed large groups of people. I am telling you this because I have not yet attended a Commission meeting, but I am comfortable working on high-stakes projects with teams that are motivated by accomplishing a common objective. I don't know what my contributions will be in the first year. My first job will be to listen more than speak, and to grasp the key issues and to thoroughly appreciate the local transportation landscape. Over the course of four years, i am certain I will have an impact on our transportation strategy but, again, it-would be naive of me to try to predict what those specific contributions will be. Rice 1. Have you ever attended a General Plan Committee meeting? If so, please provide a summary of your impression of the meeting. No. 2. Describe your knowledge of the Town's General Plan? I understand that the General Plan is put in place to designate areas of specific use in the town, planning for the future, as well as controlling development as it-impacts the town's services and potential limitations. Controlling or influencing design is another aspect to maintain an acceptable level of quality. 3. What do you think the role of a committee member is in setting policies? To offer pertinent input based on experience, knowledge, and exposure to the Los Gatos community. It is important to provide input based on a community-wide view and not just a personal or private basis. 4. What design or land use experience do you have that would be useful on the committee? I have been involved with real estate development over the last twenty years and have been introduced to the planning process with various cities and working through use permit issues, zoning changes, and design approvals. I have worked through the complete construction process from architectural drawings to bidding all the way through to completion, including working with utilities and insurance issues. 5. How would you describe your philosophy of planning? I believe that you can't lose sight of what is good for the community as a whole even though there may very well be contrary opinions. As in any business, there are difficult decisions that need to be made to the disappointment of some. There has to be a base of residential, but there also has to be enough revenue to sustain a quality residential community. The key is a balance. and a serious consideration of future. impacts. 6. Have you discussed the role of a committee member With anyone on the Planning staff? Yes, I met with Bud Lortz on May 11, 2005, and he gave me a good overview of the expectations and possible upcoming subjects.
