Page 2 of 2 Libby Lane 78 Bentley Ave. #9 Los Gatos, CA 95030 408 354.5437 February 10, 2005 Dear Town Council Members, I am attaching a cover letter to my application to present additional information. I have only lived in Los Gatos for six months but consider Los Gatos my home. I lived here from 1975-1981 and then moved away after I got married. I, however, continued to return here to visit with friends and family. In June 2004, 1 had an opportunity to change my life completely and knew that there was only one place I wanted to live - Los Gatos. I returned in September and truly feel like I am home. When I first arrived, I saw that the Council was looking to make appointments to various committees/commissions. I wanted to apply then but felt that it was a little presumptuous since I had only just moved here. Then last week when I noticed in the paper that the Council still had some appointments to make, I decided to go for it anyway. The General Plan Committee appeals to me for several reasons. I know that a general plan, as the blue print for land use in a community, is critical to ensuring not only the character but the economic vitality of a place. As you will notice, I have not served as an elected or appointed official. There is a reason for that. For most of the 24 years since I left Los Gatos, I was a newspaper reporter and generally prohibited from serving and writing about the same community. Being a reporter, however, exposed me to local land-use planning. I have covered and reported on many land use issues in various cities and counties, including adoptions of new general plans and amendments. Land use was always the most interesting issue to cover. Furthermore, my husband of 20 years was a community development director. I am very eager to get involved in the government of my community. I am one of those somewhat rare people who likes government and believes that government can be good. After leaving journalism and before returning here, I worked for Stanislaus County - first as a field representative for a county supervisor and then as the county's public information officer. Thank you for our consideration. If appointed: What would you like to accomplish during the first year as a member of the Commission? What would you like to accomplish during your four year term as a member of the Commission? How would you contribute as a Commission member to achieving these accomplishments as well as additional Commission projects? Page 2 of 2 I will answer the 4 questions posed on the application, but thought I'd offer a perspective on why I want to join the Transportation and Parking Commission: I've been a resident of Los Gatos for nearly 10 years. I've been a driver in Santa Clara County for 25 years, and bicycled extensively throughout the area for about the same amount of time. I've seen the Valley grow exponentially over that time span, and watched as government agencies have tried valiantly to build and improve transportation infrastructure to meet the increased demands of our residents. Transportation-related issues comprise a large part of the "quality of life" in Silicon Valley - a hot topic we speak about frequently at get-togethers, business meetings and around the dinner table. I want to contribute to making our local community a better place to live, and that's why I want to be part of the Transportation and Parking Commission. I have been an electronics industry executive for the past 25 years, including stints as executive vice president at chipmaker LSI Logic, and as CEO of a chip startup called Siliquent Technologies. Prior to these positions, 1 was a business reporter and columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, where I had a ringside seat to watch the explosive growth of the Valley in the early 1980s. With my background in the electronics industry, I have run divisions with several hundred million dollars in revenues, and managed large groups of people. I am telling you this because I have not yet attended a Commission meeting, but I am comfortable working on high-stakes projects with teams that are motivated by accomplishing a common objective. I don't know what my contributions will be in the first year. My first job will be to listen more than speak, and to grasp the key issues and to thoroughly appreciate the local transportation landscape. Over the course of four years, I am certain I will have an impact on our transportation strategy but, again, it would be naive of me to try to predict what those specific contributions will be. Thank you in advance for your consideration, Bruce Entin
