FIGONE, TOWN MANAGER MEETING DATE: 11/1/04 ITEM NO. 5 SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF GRANT FROM THE VALLEY FOUNDATION ••• RECOMMENDATION: Accept a grant in the amount of$50,000 from The ValleyFoundation for funding of"Hooked onLos Gatos: the Los Gatos Public Library/Museums ofLos Gatos History Project." BACKGROUND: In April, 2004, the Friends ofLos Gatos Library and the Los Gatos Museum Association sought a grant of $50,000 from The Valley Foundation to support the Library/Museums partnership in the digitization and preservation ofLos Gatos history. Los Gatos Library serves as the lead partner in the proj ect. DISCUSSION: The goals ofthe History Project are centered on these points: • Gather, select, scan, index/catalog archival materials using Dublin Core metadata standards to create an accessible database ofdigitized images and text to preserve and disseminate the Los Gatos historic record. Preserve and house archives in an acid free and secure environment. Consult with history/social science stafffrom Los Gatos elementary and secondary schools to determine how historic materials and information can be formatted and made accessible for curriculum development and classroom use. Development of a learning tool for parents and children in the form of 􀁾 ''Navigating Los Gatos History" GPS (global positioning system) game. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: Is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is required. FISCAL IMPACT: To facilitate the tracking of revenues and expenditures for "Hooked on Los Gatos: the Los Gatos Public Library/Museums of Los Gatos History Project," a new program number 7712 was established. The Valley Foundation grant money and any other "Hooked on Los Gatos" revenue and expenditure transactions will be accounted for within this program.
