MANAGER MEETING DATE: 05/03/04 COUNCIL MATTERSdo PREPARED BY: At the March 1, 2004 Town Council meeting, Los Gatos. resident Anna Bloom requested under Verbal Communications that the
Council consider renaming Brooklyn Street to Peter Sorensen Way in memory of an industrial arts teacher at Los Gatos High School and resident of Los Gatos who passed away in 2003. Ms.
Bloom had made this request ofthe Council in writing in Janliary 2003 (attachment 1). Staff researched the Town's policy related to renaming streets and found that the existing practice
is to determine ifthe requested name on a list ofhistorically significant names. This appears to have appled to the names ofnew streets, rather than to renaming streets. If the name
is not on the list, the request goes to Council for a decision. The Mayor has suggested that the matter ofstreet renaming policy be referred to the Council Policy Committee, as there
are currently no criteria or guidelines for making a decision regarding the . renaming of a street. This matter is before Council at the May 3rd Council meeting to determine if there
is Council consensus for referring the development of a street naming policy to the Council Policy Committee. The particular request for renaming Brooklyn Street would not be considered

Street to Peter Sorensen Way in memoriam of a ,beloved teacher and resident who passed away last February. Peter Sorensen was a highly respected educator and citizen of the town ofLos
Gatos who has contributed greatly to the education ofhis students at Los Gatos High School. He started at LGHS in the late retired from his position as the Industrial Arts
Teacher in 1983 and there are "a number ofresidents ofthis connilunity as well as past students who would like to have the council act favorably upon this request. I would like to pe
