FIGONE, TOWN MANAGER MEETING DATE: 4/19/04 ITEM NO. 9 SUBJECT: ADOPTARESOLUTIONDECLARINGTHATTHETOWNOF LOS GATOS WILL STRIVE TO BE A COLON CANCER FREE ZONE RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Town Coup.cil adopt a resolution declaring that Los Gatos will strive to be a colon cancer free zone (Attachment No.1). BACKGROUND: In February 2004, the City ofMonte Sereno requested that the Town proclaim the month ofMarch as "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" and join them in becoming a "Colon Cancer Free Zone." Prior to receiving this request, the Mayor had issued a "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" proclamation in January. In addition to the proclamation, the Town included information regarding colon cancer screening on the "What's New" section of the Town web site and an article in the upcoming Spring 2004 Vista. newsletter. DISCUSSION: Ms. Gay Crawford ofthe Colon Cancer 􀁉􀁮􀁩􀁴􀁩􀁡􀁾􀁩􀁶􀁥 Team of the American Cancer Society recently contacted the Townthanking the Townfor its support of"Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" and asked that the Town consider becoming a "Colon Cancer Free Zone." The cities ofMonte Sereno and Saratoga have adopted resolutions to this effect. Should the Council adopt the attached resolution, staff will continue its. colon cancer education/promotion efforts by using existing Town resources, including the web site and Town publications where appropriate. CONCLUSION: In addition to proclaiming March as "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month," Ms. Gay Crawford of the Colon Cancer Initiative Team ofthe American Cancer Society requested that the Town consider becoming a "Colon Cancer Free Zone." It is recommended that the Town Council adopt a resolution declaring that Los Gatos will strive to be a colon cancer free zone. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with the adoption ofthis resolution. RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS DECLARING THAT LOS GATOS WILL STRIVE TO BE A COLON CANCER FREE ZONE WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is seeking to develop a community based project to reduce colon cancer; and WHEREAS, the Town Council ofthe Town ofLos Gatos has determined to assist in this endeavor; and WHEREAS, the Town Council has chosen to adopt a resolution to show support of this worthwhile effort and will strive to make Los Gatos a colon cancer free zone. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Council ofthe Town ofLos Gatos, County of Santa Clara, State of California does hereby declare its desire to strive to make the Los Gatos community a colon cancer free zone.
