Main Street Los Gatos, CA 95030 ● (408) 354-6832 www.losgatosca.gov TOWN OF LOS GATOS COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT MEETING DATE: 06/01/2021 ITEM NO: 1 DATE: June 1, 2021 TO: Mayor and Town Council FROM: Laurel Prevetti, Town Manager SUBJECT: Review and Discuss the Youth Commission Accomplishments and Goals RECOMMENDATION: The Youth Commission would like to review and discuss their accomplishments for 2020-2021 and their goals and projects for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. BACKGROUND: Due to the impact of the pandemic, 2020 has been an unusual year for almost all students everywhere. The Youth Commission has accomplished many of their projects by using innovative and creative strategies to communicate and complete their goals. Commission members continue to provide a voice for the youth in the community. DISCUSSION: Below are the accomplishments and goals. Accomplishments include: • Completed the Smoking Ordinance outreach to the businesses • Held a virtual Chef-inspired Cooking Class • Assisted staff with the development and implementation of the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department Special Needs Awareness Program (SNAP) • Created a video to promote awareness about SNAP • Collaborated with the Girl Scouts to introduce a Town Ordnance that would ban the use of plastic straw • Two Commissioners completed the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training • Continued to promote the Youth Friendly and Green Friendly Business program • Working with the Red Cross and a former Youth Commissioner to host a Blood Drive at the Senior Center PAGE 2 OF 2 SUBJECT: Youth Commission Study Session DATE: May 28, 2021 • Hosted a Letters of Kindness event Los Gatos High School Goals for 21-2022: • Host a second Chef-inspired cooking class • Host Christmas and Easter event for children with disabilities • Continue to organize the Red Cross Blood Drive to be held in August • Continue SNAP outreach and work with PD to incorporate Santa Clara County Fire in the notification process • Host two puppy therapy events at Los Gatos High School • Assist with organizing the cultural diversity events at Los Gatos High School • Organize Valentine’s talent show at the Terraces Los Gatos • Hand out green ribbons during Mental Health Awareness Week • Host the Youth Commission booth at the Spring into Green Event • Host a Youth Commission float at the Town of Los Gatos Children’s Holiday Parade • Host another Letters of Kindness event • Continue to develop and introduce a plastic straw ban Town Ordinance CONCLUSION: The Youth Commission would like to share their accomplishments for 2020-2021 and provide Council with their goals for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. The Commission would also like to discuss ideas, projects, and/or goals that Council would like to see accomplished by the Youth Commission for 2021-2022.
