Veterans and First Responders Memorial
We had the opportunity to attend the presentation and were very impressed with it. We think it is a great idea and
agree with the location . My husband is a navy veteran of the Korean Ware and my brother a veteran Marine Recon, of
the Vietnam War.
Thank you .

Dear Mayor and Town Council Members-
It is with the utmost respect for the committee that has worked so hard on this worthy project for
such a long time that I offer my concerns . After taking the "virtual tour" from the link on the
honoravet.org website, my strongest impression was that it was lacking the dignity to be found in
simplicity of design. The current design of the fountain with the central glass flame seems
incompatible with the surroundings as well as the purpose of the memorial. I realize that over

the last few years there have been many proposals, and that the newest site may be the best
location, but I hope you will encourage the Memorial and Support Foundation to see that "less is
more" when it comes to honoring our heroes.

Veterans Memorial
I am excited for the new veterans memorial in the Civic Center plaza. However, I have reviewed the plans and seen
the current mock-up outside of the museum that demonstrates the scale of the memorial and have a few concerns. As
a Town residents, my husband and I feel that the scale should be brought down a bit to compliment and not hide the
existing buildings and nature in and around the Civic Center.
My husband and I hope to make the upcoming Town meeting regarding this issue, but should we not be able to attend
I hope you will consider our suggestions.
Best to you,
Leslie and Stuart Kuramoto

Historic Fir e Bell
With the assistance of Lyn Dougherty of the Library's Local History Resources Section, the following information was
gathered from an extensive collection of newspaper articles, letters, and photographs pertaining to the Town's Fire Bell.
The 2500# forged metal bell was cast in the 1890s in the likeness of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia . It was mounted on a
65' wooden tower located behind what is now St. Luke's Episcopal Church on University Avenue . in 1899.
The fire bell rang to warn town resident s of fire. Prior to the in stallation of the bell, local churches rang their bells to
warn residents of impending disaster. Thu s, the ringing of the bell reminded them of the importance of the life-saving
role of the alarm .
A disastrous fire occurred in 1901, destroying the downtown and the wooden fire bell tower. The bell fell to the ground,
sustaining the three cracks we see today, but did not hamper the bell's tone.
A new steel tower was erected after the fire and the bell was used until the 1930s when it was silenced . It remained at
the St. Luke's location until 1947, then sold and moved to private property in Lodi. The bell was then purchased,
donated, and returned to the Town in 1986 . As previously, the bell rang at noon, and for a lO:OOPM curfew. During that
time, the bell wa s located in the Town Pla za until the beginning of the 21st century when it was moved to its present
location at the former fire station on the corner of West Main St. and Tait Ave . where it now rests.
The hi storic fire bell i s a reminder of the fire danger to the Town . It is a significant player in the Town's history. A strong
case ca n be made to keep the fire bell at its present locatio n, a former fire station, but hou se d in an appropriately
de sign ed and constructed tower adjacent to the station. Such a design was made by the well-known local architect Gary
Schleh in 2002 . The original drawing still exi sts.
To locate the historic fire bell adjacent to the Veterans Memorial proposed for the redwood grove in the front lawn of
the Civic Center is at odd s with the fire bell's original purpose and history.
I strongly recommend the bell remain at the former fire station, hou sed in a new an d co mpatible tower, with a plaque
signifying its historic role and use through time.
