SUBJECT: APPROVE PROPOSED TOWN LAUREATE SELECTION POLICY
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the proposed Town Laureate Selection Policy (Attachment 1).
REMARKS:
The Town of Los Gatos Poet Laureate position was established in 2010 to further the
appreciation and advancement of poetry and literary arts in Los Gatos. Since the establishment
of this position, Council has appointed three individuals to serve. Parthenia Hicks served a
three-year term from 2010 through 2012. Erica Goss served a three-year term from 2013
through 2015. Current Poet Laureate Stan Garber served a two-year term beginning in 2016
and has had his term extended by Town Council for a third year.
Though the position was established in 2010, no policy was put into place to set rules for who
should serve on the selection committee, the length of the Poet Laureate’s term, or the
qualifications for holding the position. The proposed Policy serves to clarify these guidelines
(see Attachment 1). On October 19th, 2017, the Council Policy Committee discussed the draft
Policy and recommended that the Town Council adopt the proposed Town Laureate Selection
Policy as presented in Attachment 1.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The adoption and implementation of the proposed Policy has no fiscal impact.
