TOWN OF LOS GATOS
COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
MEETING DATE: 05/07/2019
ITEM NO: 7
ADDENDUM
DATE: MAY 6, 2019
TO: MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL
FROM: LAUREL PREVETTI, TOWN MANAGER
SUBJECT: AUTHORIZE THE TOWN MANAGER TO PURCHASE A REPLACEMENT TEN-
WHEEL DUMP TRUCK FROM COAST COUNTIES TRUCK AND EQUIPMENT
COMPANY IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $175,068
REMARKS:
The following question was received from a Councilmember after the distribution of the staff
report; staff responses follow in italic font:
Question: There was a request last year by someone involved with BAAQMD for Los Gatos to
be diesel free in the future. Although this dump truck is much better, it is not diesel free. Does
this purchase meet the spirit of the request? Do we have a non-diesel alternative? Is diesel free
just not feasible?
Answer: Staff has recommended light and medium duty vehicles and equipment purchases
(pickups, vans, etc.) with non-diesel engines. For heavy equipment like this dump truck, there is
not a feasible non-diesel production vehicle on the market to take its place. As the staff report
highlights, the move to a Tier IV diesel on this model will bring emissions down by very
significant amounts. In addition, the Town uses renewable diesel to fuel the vehicle. Renewable
diesel is the newest technology in non-petroleum-based fuels, made with animal fats and
vegetable oils. These combined strategies continue to reduce the Town’s carbon footprint.
