Although this dump truck is much better, it is not diesel free. Does this purchase meet the spirit of the request? Do we have a non-diesel alternative? Is diesel free just not feasible? Answer: Staff has recommended light and medium duty vehicles and equipment purchases (pickups, vans, etc.) with non-diesel engines. For heavy equipment like this dump truck, there is not a feasible non-diesel production vehicle on the market to take its place. As the staff report highlights, the move to a Tier IV diesel on this model will bring emissions down by very significant amounts. In addition, the Town uses renewable diesel to fuel the vehicle. Renewable diesel is the newest technology in non-petroleum-based fuels, made with animal fats and vegetable oils. These combined strategies continue to reduce the Town’s carbon footprint.
