MY NAME IS , AND I'M HERE ON BEHALF OF THE LOS GATOS EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS PROJECT. THE PROJECT HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE BY A GRANT TO THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS FROM THE BAY AREA REGIONAL EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS PROJECT, WHICH IS IN TURN JOINTLY SPONSORED BY THE CALIFORNIA SEISMIC SAFETY COMMISSION AND THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY. I WANT TO THANK OUR HOST /HOSTESS, I FOR INVITING ALL OF YOU INTO HIS /HER HOME FOR THIS PRESENTATION TONIGHT, AND I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR COMING. IN THE NEXT ONE AND ONE HALF HOURS, YOU WILL RECEIVE ENOUGH PRACTICAL "HOW TO" INFORMATION TO MAKE YOURSELVES MUCH SAFER WHEN THE NEXT BIG EARTHQUAKE STRIKES THIS AREA ... AS IT INEVITABLY WILL. BUT BEFORE GETTING INTO THE PROGRAM ITSELF, A FEW WORDS ARE NEEDED ABOUT THE LOS GATOS EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS PROJECT. MOST EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS PROGRAMS GIVE OUT TONS OF INFORMATION AND THEN JUST HOPE. WE'RE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. WHILE WE WILL GIVE YOU A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION, WE HAVE Los Gatos Earthquake Preparedness Project This program is made possible by the Town of Los Gatos through P.O. Box 949, Los Gatos, CA 95031 a grant froth the Bay Area Regional Earthquake Preparedness Phone: (408) 354 -1962 Project —a program of the California Seismic Safety Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Preparedness Prese,.cation Page 2- 2 -2 -2 -2 TRIED TO BE MORE SELECTIVE ABOUT WHAT WE ADVOCATE. YOU'LL SEE, FOR EXAMPLE, THAT WE DON'T ASK YOU TO STOCKPILE FOOD AND WATER. THAT'S BECAUSE WE THINK THE GREAT MAJORITY OF YOU CAN COPE ADEQUATELY FOLLOWING AN EARTHQUAKE WITHOUT ADDING SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE SUPPLIES YOU WOULD NORMALLY HAVE ON HAND, AND WE WANT TO CONCENTRATE OUR ATTENTION ON MORE CRITICAL ITEMS. BUT AN EVEN MORE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE ABOUT THE LOS GATOS EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS PROJECT IS THAT WE DON'T PLAN TO LEAVE YOU TONIGHT AND JUST HOPE. WE PLAN TO FOLLOW THROUGH. FOR THAT REASON, WE'LL START TONIGHT BY PASSING AROUND THIS SIGN -UP SHEET (PASS IT), AND WE'LL END TONIGHT BY ASKING EACH OF YOU, BEFORE YOU LEAVE, TO FILL OUT A PARTICIPATION AND EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE CONTAINED IN THE WORKBOOK WE'LL HAND OUT IN A FEW MINUTES. FOLLOWING TONIGHT'S MEETING, YOUR HOST OR HOSTESS AND I WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH YOU, BY PHONE OR BY MAIL, TWO OR THREE TIMES. WE'LL ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE THE ACTIONS THAT WILL MAKE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY BETTER PREPARED, WE'LL TRY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS AND HELP YOU IN ANY WAY WE CAN, AND AT THE END WE'LL ASK YOU AGAIN TO COMPLETE A QUESTIONNAIRE TO TELL US WHAT YOU'VE ACTUALLY DONE. IN ADDITION, WE WILL BE AVAILABLE BY PHONE TO RESPOND TO YOUR QUESTIONS OR NEEDS. WE'RE DOING THIS EXTENSIVE AND PERSONALIZED FOLLOW -UP BECAUSE JUST TALK WON'T MAKE YOU MUCH SAFER. YOU MUST ACT TO DO THAT, AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE'VE DONE EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO ENCOURAGE AND ASSIST YOU. Preparedness Presentation Page 3- 3 -3 -3 -3 FINALLY, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS A "PILOT" PROGRAM. ONLY ABOUT 1000 OF THE 10,000 HOUSEHOLDS IN LOS GATOS WILL RECEIVE THIS SERVICE. WE MUST MEASURE YOUR PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS TO DETERMINE IF THE PROGRAM SHOULD BE OFFERED TO THE REST OF THE TOWN, AND SO REMEMBER THAT IN YOUR HANDS IS THE KEY TO PROTECTING THE OTHER 9000 HOUSEHOLDS IN LOS GATOS FROM THE POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS OF A GREAT EARTHQUAKE. BODY OF PRESENTATION OUR PRESENTATION TONIGHT CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS: o FIRST, A 20- MINUTE VIDEOTAPE, CONSISTING OF EXCERPTS FROM A LONGER PROGRAM PRODUCED BY GTE, WHICH WILL GIVE YOU SOME BACKGROUND ON EARTHQUAKES AS WELL AS A FIRST QUICK RUN THROUGH OF SOME KEY PREPAREDNESS MEASURES. o SECOND, I WILL DISTRIBUTE THIS WORKBOOK (HOLD UP), AND WALK THROUGH IT WITH YOU IN SOME DETAIL. IT WILL GIVE YOU SOME PRACTICAL "HOW TO" INFORMATION, AND IT ALSO CONTAIN A QUE.STIOANAIRE WHICH WE WANT ALL OF YOU TO FILL OUT BEFORE LEAVING TONIGHT. o AND THIRD, I WILL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS. PLEASE ASK, BUT UNDERSTAND THAT I MAY NOT KNOW ALL THE Preparedness Presentation Page 4- 4 -4 -4 -4 ANSWERS. THIS IS A VERY COMPLEX FIELD, AND RATHER THAN RISK MISINFORMING YOU, I MAY GET BACK TO YOU BY PHONE OR LETTER. SO WITH THAT, UNLESS THERE ARE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS AT THIS POINT, LET'S GET INTO THE VIDEOTAPE (PAUSE). SHOW TAPE BEFORE GETTING INTO THE WORKBOOK, ARE THERE ANY REACTIONS, COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS AT THIS POINT? DISCUSSION AS DESIRED BY GROUP OK, LET'S GET INTO THE WORKBOOK. (PASS AROUND COPIES.) WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF WORKBOOKS AVAILABLE, SO I'D LIKE TO ASK THAT YOU TAKE ONLY ONE PER HOUSEHOLD. BEFORE GETTING INTO THE REAL BODY INSIDE THE COVER, I'D CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE BACK COVER. WE'VE WRITTEN THIS WORKBOOK TO DEAL WITH THE EFFECTS OF A GREAT EARTHQUAKE -- MAGNITUDE 8.0 ON THE RICHTER SCALE OR GREATER. THE SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE OF 1906 WAS 8.3 ON THE SCALE, AND TO GIVE YOU A SENSE OF THE POWER OF SUCH A QUAKE, THE SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE RELEASED ROUGHLY 20,000 TO 30,000 TIMES MORE ENERGY THAN THE MAGNITUDE 5.3 EARTHQUAKE MANY OF YOU FELT EARLIER THIS SPRING. Preparedness Presentation Page 5- 5 -5 -5 -5 AS THE TEXT ON THE BACK COVER MAKES CLEAR, THE HELP YOU WOULD NORMALLY COUNT ON IN AN EMERGENCY MAY BE ESSENTIALLY UNAVAILABLE AFTER A GREAT EARTHQUAKE. YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS AND CO- WORKERS ARE LIKELY TO HAVE TO RELY PRETTY MUCH ON YOURSELVES FOR UP TO SEVERAL DAYS. WHATEVER CATCHES FIRE WILL LIKELY BURN DOWN, AND PEOPLE WILL DIE OF INJURIES THAT WOULDN'T NORMALLY BE CONSIDERED LIFE THREATENING. ON THE OTHER HAND, IT MAKES NO SENSE TO BE FATALISTIC. WHILE WE CANNOT STOP AN EARTHQUAKE FROM STRIKING, WE CAN PREVENT A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE DEATHS, INJURIES AND DAMAGE IT COULD CAUSE. YOU ARE FAR FROM POWERLESS. IN FACT, WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU, YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR HOME RESTS LARGELY IN YOUR HANDS. SO WITH THAT AS MOTIVATION, LETS GET INTO THE WORKBOOK ITSELF. WHILE WE HAVE RESERVED A PORTION OF OUR PROGRAM AT THE END FOR QUESTIONS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO STOP ME IF SOME ASPECT OF THE PRESENTATION RAISES AN IMMEDIATE QUESTION. I MIGHT ADD THAT THERE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF QUESTIONS THAT MIGHT BE ASKED ABOUT AN EARTHQUAKE, AND I'M NEITHER AN ENGINEER OR SEISMOLOGIST. QUESTIONS MAY BE ASKED THAT I WON'T FEEL CONFIDENT ANSWERING. IN THAT CASE, I'LL TAKE YOUR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER AND TRY TO GET BACK TO YOU WITH AN ANSWER. THE WORKBOOK CONSISTS OF EIGHT SECTIONS OR MODULES. (HOLD OPEN THE WORKBOOK, READ THE HEADING OF EACH MODULE AND POINT -- ONE Preparedness Presentation Page 6- 6 -6 -6 -6 THROUGH EIGHT.) LET'S REVIEW THEM BRIEFLY, ONE BY ONE THE WORKBOOK TO WALK THROUGH.) COMPLETE THE WORKBOOK REVIEW. ANSWERIN AS APPROPRIATE (REMOVE EACH MODULE FROM UESTIONS ALONG THE WAY OK, LET'S FINISH UP. I'D LIKE TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTS, REACTIONS, AND QUESTIONS. WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT TO DO? AND WHAT DO YOU STILL NEED TO KNOW TO GET THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS DONE? DISCUSSION /QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS CONCLUSION GOOD. I THINK THAT ABOUT WRAPS IT UP FOR TONIGHT. REMEMBER, TALK ALONE IS WORTHLESS. ONLY ACTIONS WILL PROTECT YOU. WE'RE GOING TO BE CONTACTING EACH OF YOU SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, AND YOU CAN CALL US WITH QUESTIONS AT THIS NUMBER SHOWN IN YOUR WORKBOOK (POINT). ALSO, PLEASE BE SURE TO FILL OUT THE QUESTIONNAIRE AT THE END OF YOUR WORKBOOK AND HAND IT TO ME BEFORE YOU LEAVE. NOW THAT WE'VE COMPLETED THE PRESENTATION, LET'S PAUSE FOR A Preparedness Pre56..ation Page 7- 7 -7 -7 -7 MINUTE OR TWO TO HELP OURSELVES TO THE REFRESHMENTS WHICH (HOST /HOSTESS) HAS PROVIDED. THANKS FOR COMING, AND DON'T HESITATE TO CALL IF YOU RUN INTO ANY PROBLEMS OR NEED A QUESTION ANSWERED. WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO HELP YOU.
