RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE COASTAL ACT
WHEREAS, the people of California have made protection of the state's
coast one of their highest priorities as evidenced by the passage of
Proposition 20 in 1972;
WHEREAS, the policies setforth in Proposition 20 served as the basis for
the development of the Coastal Act adopted by the Legislature in 1976;
WHEREAS, public opinions polls indicate that people still support the
clause in the Coastal Act which states "the permanent protection of the
state's natural and scenic resources is a paramount concern to present
and future residents of the state and nation ";
WHEREAS, the California coast, one of the most beautiful and resource
rich in the world, has been protected and enhanced by the enactment of
the Coastal Act;
WHEREAS, the California coast has continued to be the basis for
significant economic benefit to the state in the form of tourism, fishing,
forestry, coastal dependent agriculture, and other business activities;
WHEREAS, the Coastal Act has provided for continued economic development
of the coast in a manner which is protective of coastal resources;
WHEREAS, the Coastal Act has promoted appropriate planning policies and
is largely responsible for such successful projects such as the
internationally acclaimed Monterey Bay Aquarium;
WHEREAS, the Coastal Act has succeeded in making thousands of acres
available to the residents of the state and is responsible for 2,000
development permits containing public access requirements;
WHEREAS, the Coastal Act has encouraged the development of local
government policies which protect and preserve the coast's original
character for future generations;
WHEREAS, the full goals of the Coastal Act have not yet been achieved
and will require continued application of the Act's policies;
WHEREAS, the resources and quality of the California coastline are being
challenged by toxic contaminants, pollution and previously unforseen
threats;
WHEREAS, approximately eighty percent of California's population lives
within 50 miles of the coastline;

WHEREAS, the California coastal economy and culture is largely dependent
on the health and vitality of the coast's resources and natural qualities;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Assembly and Senate of the State of
California, jointly, that the Legislature and the State of California
hereby designates 1986 as the "Tenth Anniversary Year of the California
Coastal Act "; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that April be designated as the "Month of the
Coast" to celebrate and honor one of the state's and the country's
greatest resources, the California Coast.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos,
California at a regular meeting held this 7th day of April, 1986, by
the following vote:
