A RESOLUTION COMMENDING
RUTHERFORD G. MONTGOMERY
WHEREAS, RUTHERFORD G. MONTGOMERY was a resident of the Town of Los Gatos for
over 40 years, residing at the family home on Walnut Avenue since
moving from Colorado in 1939; and
WHEREAS, MR. MONTGOMERY, who died at his home after a long illness at the
age of 91, leaving his beloved wife, Eunice, his three children,
seven grandchildren, and four great - grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, MR. MONTGOMERY's greatest legacy lies in the body of children's
literature which he leaves to future generations in some 131 books
and countless short stories dealing with nature and animals (his
best -known books include "Carcajou: The Story of a Wolverine,"
"Kildee House," "Wapiti the Elk," and "Beaver Water ") for which he
won numerous awards -- the Newbery Award for juvenile books, the San
Francisco Commonwealth Club literary award, the Spring Book Award
from the New York Herald Tribune, the Jack London Award for California
Writers, and a fellowship in International Arts and Letters from
Sweden; and
WHEREAS, MR. MONTGOMERY also worked for several years for Walt Disney Studios,
where he wrote some 14 scripts, one of which -- "Sancho, the Homing
Steer" -- brought him an Academy Award nomination in 1962; and
WHEREAS, MR. MONTGOMERY's long - standing love of nature and animals led to
making young and old alike aware of animals as they truly are, what
they do and how they behave;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos
does hereby commend RUTHERFORD G. MONTGOMERY for his contribution to our com-
munity and to future booklovers through his outstanding collection of works
dedicated to children (and their parents!) throughout the United States.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA at
a regular meeting held this 15th day of July 1985,
