RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL
OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
ADOPTING THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT
SIGN REPLACEMENT PROGRAM FOR SIGNS LOCATED
IN THE RIGHT -OF -WAY
WHEREAS, the Town Council and Redevelopment Agency adopted the Central
Business District Improvement Guidelines and Streetscape Plan in May 1996 and implementing
the Guidelines involves creating a Sign Replacement Program; and
WHEREAS, the Los Gatos Town Council/ Redevelopment Agency and Town
Manager referred this item to staff in August 1997; and
WHEREAS, staff surveyed the existing Downtown signs, took slides and
considered the recommendations of the Central Business District Improvement Guidelines
about signs before developing a Draft Sign Replacement Program; and
WHEREAS, staff presented the Draft Sign Replacement Program to Town
Council on January 20, 1998 and Council requested staff to present the Program to the
Chamber of Commerce and all pertinent Town Committees and Commissions; and
WHEREAS, during February 1998 staff presented the Sign Replacement Program
to the Historic Preservation Committee, Arts Commission, Community Services Commission,
Chamber of Commerce, Parking Commission, Planning Commission, Downtown
Beautification Committee, Redevelopment Advisory Committee and Chamber of Commerce;
and
WHEREAS, during March 1998 staff re- evaluated the Draft Sign Replacement
Program and made revisions based on the input of all groups mentioned above, and worked
with two graphic designers on creating an icon for the street name signs; and
WHEREAS, the focus of the Sign Program is to simplify and reduce the number
of signs in the downtown; and
WHEREAS, Town Council and all groups presented with the Sign Replacement
Program agree that the downtown needs a unified sign program for signs located in the Right -
of -Way.
RESOLVED, that the Town Council finds that the Central Business District Sign
Replacement Program is not a project subject to CEQA pursuant to Section 15061(b)(3) of the
California Environmental Quality Act Guidelines.
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Planning Commission recommends that the
CBD Sign Replacement Program, which is attached hereto, marked Exhibit A, should be
adopted by the Town Council.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the Town
of Los Gatos, California, held on the 20th day of April 1998 by the following vote.
