Subject: LG Bag Ban - alternatives
I think the proposed bag ban, which the LG Weekly presented as being a "done deal" is a stupid idea. I wanted to propose some
alternatives for consideration:
• Instead of providing bags, ask people if they WANT a bag. This was done with water conservation in CA years
ago. Instead of just pouring water at the restaurant, waiters asked patrons if they wanted water. Cant we do the
same with bags if the idea is to get people to think about using them?
• Provide recycled paper bags and boxes instead of plastic - ban plastic but give us some way to get goods home.
• Reward customers for bringing in their own bags (i.e. $0.10 credit instead of $0.10 charge). Give people a reason to
recycle as is done in CA with glass bottles and aluminum.
IF the Council does adopt this ban on all bags... please make sure that the price per bag is a fixed fee that cannot change without going
to a city vote. Retail stores in other cities that have adopted this ban are now charging $0.25fbag. I believe that the retailers are
actually making a profit on the sale of bags. DONT allow a profit on sale of plastic or paper bags in Los Gatos.
Also, don't expect my vote if you adopt this bag ban without first considering and TRYING alternatives and weighing their impact.
Regards,
Bob
