DISCUSSION TOPIC
Study session on proposals for the re-use of the former library facility.
Greg Larson, Town Manager
- Provided background on the environmental review already completed in conjunction
with the construction of the new library.
- Commented that upgrades to the restrooms and HVAC will be needed, regardless
of the type of future use.
Council considered the following proposals:
1. Tom Woodruff from the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District proposed
administrative office space.
2. The Friends of the Library presented two proposals. Valerie Archer proposed a
retail bookstore. Dale Hill proposed a community room for the Library.

center and museum.
4. Pamela Jacobs from the Town of Los Gatos proposed office space and

Council Discussion
- Commented that all the proposals are worthy, but the Museums’ proposal captures
the vision of the first guiding principle, which is to improve the quality of life for Los
Gatos residents.
- Commented that the Museums’ proposal requires more explanation about parking
and funding and greater detail about the vision for the use of the space.
- Commented that the Friends of the Library bookstore could work well with the
Museums’ proposal and that the bookstore could be located upstairs or downstairs.
- Commented that the school district’s proposal would provide revenue, but it does
not contribute to the quality of life as much as other proposals.
- Commented on the need to expand the restrooms and upgrade the HVAC unit.
- Commented on the potential need for more environmental review, depending on the
final approved uses.
- Commented that staff should meet with representatives from the Museums of Los
Gatos and the Friends of the Library to formulate a plan for how the two agencies
could use the space together.
