Ord 1734 - DESIGNATING STRUCTURES AS HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT (MARIA'S BERRY FARM)ORDINANCE NO. 1734
AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
DESIGNATING STRUCTURES AS HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT
(MARIA'S BERRY FARM)
The Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos does ordain as follows:
SECTION I
The following structure is hereby designated historically and culturally
significant:
HD -87 -1 Maria's Berry Farm (Main House and Water Tower)
16301 W. Mozart Avenue
A detailed description of the designated structures, the characteristics
which justify designation, and a map showing the location and delineation of
the historic structures, are part of this ordinance.
SECTION II
The property listed is designated to be of historic, architectural, or
aesthetic significance for the reasons listed below:
A. Property: Maria's Berry Farm, 16301 W. Mozart Avenue
B. Historic Designation No.: HD -87 -1
C. Description of Designation: Primary residence and water tower
D. Description or Characteristics which justify Designation:
The primary residence was constructed by Senator /Judge
Hastings as a Summer Home prior to the turn of the
Century. The five bedroom, two bath house contains
approximately 3,000 square feet, and most of the original
fixtures remain intact. During the last 73 years the
various owners of the house have been involved in humane
efforts. For example, during World War I, the house was
used for packing and shipping much needed supplies to both
American and German troops. Most recently, the residence
provided housing for numerous low income persons. An
inspection by the Town revealed that the house is in
reasonably good condition structurally as is the water
tower.
The water tower has become a landmark designating the
northerly boundary of the Town. In addition, the water
tower is one of the few water towers that still remain in
the Town.
E. Description of Particular Features that Should be Preserved in
Addition to Those Covered under Section 4.86.120: NONE
SECTION III
The designated structures are in close proximity to the proposed
interchange of Route 85 and Highway 17. An interchange of this magnitude will
have a significant impact upon the community value of the designated structures
and, therefore, the structures may have to be relocated prior to the
construction of Route 85 to a site approved by the Town.
