DATE: AUGUST 25, 2011
TO: MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL
FROM: GREG LARSON, TOWN MANAGER
MEETING DATE: 9/6/11
ITEM NO:
K1
SUBJECT: PPW JOB NO. 10-04 — WEDGEWOOD AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS
(MULBERRY DRIVE TO GRANADA WAY) 471-812-0112
APPROVE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE WEDGEWOOD
AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS (MULBERRY DRIVE TO GRANADA WAY)
PROJECT AND AUTHORIZE STAFF TO ADVERTISE THE PROJECT FOR
BID.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve plans and specifications for the Wedgewood Avenue improvements (Mulberry Drive to
Granada Way) and authorize staff to advertise the project for bid.
BACKGROUND:
The Town's adopted FY 2011/12-2015/16 Capital Improvement Program designates funding for
infrastructure construction projects. This is consistent with the Town's goals to improve public
safety and to improve the quality of Town streets.
The Town of Los Gatos, in coordination with the La Rinconada Country Club, undertook the
initial phase of improvements to Wedgewood Avenue in 2008. This project addressed several
issues of concern for area residents, including roadway flooding and stoiiii drain system,
pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and traffic operations. La Rinconada Country Club as part of
conditions of approval for their development project, paid for the construction of sidewalks and
roadway widening while the Town paid for the storm drain system construction and its related
improvements to eliminate flooding along Wedgewood Avenue. The scope of this completed
project on Wedgewood extended from Wimbledon Drive to Mulberry Drive. The project was
successfully constructed with support and appreciation from area residents.
As part of the Town's FY 2011/12 Capital Budget, funding was allocated for the design work of
the final phase of Wedgewood Avenue improvements for the section of roadway from Mulberry
Drive to Granada Way, ending at La Rinconada Park.

SUBJECT: PPW JOB NO. 10-04 — WEDGEWOOD AVENUE IMPROVEMENTS
(MULBERRY DRIVE TO GRANADA WAY) 471-812-0112
BACKGROUND (cont.):
This final phase of the project will complement the work done in 2008, and will complete the
work proposed for Wedgewood Avenue.
DISCUSSION:
Staff solicited design proposals from civil engineering consultants earlier this year and after
review and evaluation of the proposals, the consulting firm of Harris Associates Inc., was
selected to design the planned improvements. This design work has been in progress for several
months and final construction documents are now ready for bidding.
This project will install a new storm drain system along the south side of Wedgewood Drive and
will fill the open drainage ditches that are currently on that stretch of road. Sidewalks will be
constructed along the south side of Wedgewood Avenue to connect the existing sidewalks at
Mulberry Drive to Granada Way. The design will follow a style of sidewalks meandering along
the roadway so it preserves the look and feel of the surrounding area. Some non-native trees will
be removed as part of this project and new trees will be planted in the planter areas between
sidewalks and curbs. There will be sections of small retaining walls constructed to accommodate
the construction of new sidewalks. The retaining walls will be made of wood and steel beams to
preserve the rustic look of the surrounding area.
Plans and Specifications for this project are complete and will be available for review in the
Clerk's Department on the Friday before the Town Council meeting. If the Town Council
approves this project, it will be advertised, and a construction contract for the award will be
presented to the Town Council in October 17, 2011.
CONCLUSION:
It is recommended that the Council approve plans and specifications for the Wedgewood Avenue
Improvements (Mulberry Drive to Granada Way) and authorize staff to advertise the project for
bids.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:
This is a project as defined under CEQA but is Categorically Exempt (Section 15301c). A Notice
of Exemption will not be filed.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The construction cost estimate for this project is $800,000. There are sufficient funds available
for this project through the Town's adopted FY 2011/12 Capital Budget.
