SUBJECT: PPW JOB NO. 09-12 - FISCAL YEAR 2009/10 - RETAINING WALL
REPLACEMENT PROJECT AT CLELAND AVENUE PROJECT 411-815-9930
ADOPT RESOLUTION APPROVING PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR
THE RETAINING WALL REPLACEMENT AT CLELAND AVENUE AND
AUTHORIZING STAFF TO ADVERTISE THE PROJECT FOR BID.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Resolution approving plans and specifications for the Retaining Wall Replacement Project
at Cleland Avenue and authorizing staff to advertise the project for bid.
BACKGROUND:
The adopted Capital Improvement Program designates funding for retaining wall projects. The
identification and prioritization of retaining wall replacement projects is consistent with the
Town's goal of improving public safety.
DISCUSSION:
Retaining wall repair and replacement projects are identified throughout Town and are
prioritized for repair based on condition, safety issues, and traffic/roadway impacts.
This particular project will construct an extension to the existing retaining wall along Cleland
Avenue in the area above Pageant Park. Construction of this wall is necessary due to the steep
embanlunent below Cleland Avenue, the deterioration of the road base, and the subsequent
movement of the roadway towards the downhill embankment.
The new retaining wall will be constructed with steel beams and pressure -treated lumber. This
type of retaining wall is similar to others recently constructed along Villa Avenue. Additionally,
the style of this wall has a rustic look which softens its visual impact.

DISCUSSION (cont'd):
Plans and Specifications for this project are complete and available for review in the Clerk
Department on the Friday before the Town Council meeting. If the Town Council approves this
project, the project will be advertised for bids. A construction contract will then be presented to
the Town Council at a regular meeting in February 2010 for award.
CONCLUSION:
Staff recommends the Town Council adopt a Resolution approving plans and specifications for
the Retaining Wall Replacement Project at Cleland Avenue and authorizing staff to advertise the
project for bids.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT:
This is a project as defined under CEQA but is Categorically Exempt (Section 15301c). A Notice
of Exemption will not be filed.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The estimated construction cost for this project is $180,000. There are sufficient funds available
for this project in account number 411-815-9930.

RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL
OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
APPROVING THE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR
PPW JOB NO. 09-12 — FISCAL YEAR 2009/10
RETAINING WALL REPLACEMENT PROJECT AT
CLELAND AVENUE
AND AUTHORIZING STAFF TO ADVERTISE THE PROJECT FOR BIDS
WHEREAS, plans and specifications for the Retaining Wall Replacement Project at
Cleland Avenue have been prepared by the Town Engineer and duly filed with the Clerk
Administrator; and
WHEREAS, the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos has reviewed said plans and
specifications.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Council hereby approves the
plans and specifications for the Retaining Wall Replacement Project at Cleland Avenue.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk Administrator is hereby authorized and
directed to advertise the Retaining Wall Replacement Project at Cleland Avenue for bids in the
manner prescribed by the Town Municipal Code.
PASSED AND ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Town Council of the Town of
Los Gatos held on the 21 st day of December, 2009 by the following vote:
