RESOLUTION BY THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS SUPPORTING THE PURCHASE OF
ULTRA-LOW AND ZERO EMISSION VEHICLES FOR NON-EMERGENCY
OPERATIONS TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION AND IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH
WHEREAS, the majority of California's air pollution comes from mobile sources,
such as cars, trucks, and buses; .and
WHEREAS, conventional gasoline-powered cars, even the newest and cleanest
cars, degrade with use and become serious sources of pollution;
WHEREAS, "upstream emissions" from gasoline, including those .from refineries,
diesel trucks delivering fuel, and evaporating and spilled fuel are significant contributors. to
unhealthy air; and
WHEREAS, a wide variety of vehicles in many applications, including ultra-low
emissions (ULEV), super-ultra-low-emission (SULEV), .and zero-emission (ZEV) configurations
are available for purchase; and
WHEREAS, reducing .air pollution is a shared responsibility, requiring the
coordination and participation of all communities and their community members; and
WHEREAS, significant funding is available to local government through specific
legislation, local .Air Districts, and the California Air Resources Board to purchase ULEVs,
SLTLEVs, an ZEVs; and
WHEREAS, some cities have adopted procurement policies that give preference to
low emission vehicles for non-emergency operations; and
WHEREAS, it is the current vehicle procurement practice of the Town of Los Gatos
to identify and purchase alternative fuel, ultra-low emission vehicles for non-emergency
operations.
.NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Council of Los Gatos
hereby commits to give preference in vehicle procurement regarding the purchase of the ultra-
low emission, non-emergency vehicles available to reduce air pollution and improve public
health.

of Los Gatos, California,. held on the 6th day of May, 2002 by the following vote:
