SUBJECT: RATIFY YOUTH AND STUDENT COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS AS
RECOMMENDED BY THE AD HOC COUNCIL SUBSCOMMITTEE
RECOMMENDATION:
Ratify student appointments for the Youth, Community Services, and Parks Commissions as
recommended by the Ad Hoe Council Sub-Committee {Attachment No. 1).
DISCUSSION:
Attached for Council consideration is a list of recommended 2008109 Youth and Student
Commission appointments. A recruitment process was conducted in early spring to fill a total of
17 expiring commission positions. The Youth Commission is comprised of 8 positions, with 5
alternates. The Community Services and Parks Commissions require 2 student commissions
each. The Town received a total of 10 applications.
Interviews were conducted by an Ad Hoe Council Subcommittee comprised of Mayor Barbara
Spector, Vice Mayor Mike Wasserman, Scott Seaman, Chief of Police, Greg Larson, Town
Manager, and Mike Loya, Youth Coordinator for Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation. Youth
Commissioner Brandi Pech also participated on the interview panel to provide a youth
perspective. The recommended appointments were based on the candidates' background,
experience and interview responses, and are comprised of youth from the grade levels of the
vacated seats to maintain a balanced youth representation.
The Council Ad Hoc Subcommittee recommends that Council ratify the attached list of Youth
and Student Commission appointments. Once appointed, the terms of Youth and Student
Commissioners will parallel the school year and begin in September 2008 and expire June 2009.
A Youth and Student Commission Orientation will be held in Summer 2008. The remaining 7
vacant commission positions wil e -adv rtised and interviews are tentatively scheduled for

early Fall. The Police, Community Services, and Parks and Public Works Departments will
continue to manage their respective commissions and work with the Manager's Office to identify
opportunities for commission involvement in Town issues and projects.
CONCLUSION:
It is recommended that Council ratify the attached list of 2008109 Youth and Student
Commission appointments. Vacant commission positions will be re-advertised throughout the
summer with interviews tentatively scheduled for early Fall 2008.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Funds to support youth and student commission activities have been included in the FY 2008109
Operating Budget.
