April 20, 1999
Dear Town Council Members,
Thank you for your on -going support of A Place for Teens and of our
healthy, safe, supervised, drug -and -alcohol -free programming for the teens of our
community. Our two terrific Directors are implementing all kinds of new and
positive after -school and weekend activities to help keep the teens out of trouble.
Our programs and activities are geared to both the middle school and high school
ages, with many movie nights, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade dances and fun nights, after
school pizza eating contests, pool tournaments against school administrators and
LGPD officers, arts conferences, college day tours, dominoes tournaments, and
our tutoring programs in our exciting newly upgraded Computer/Study room.
Last year the Town of L.G. committed $8300 in CSC grants to teen
programming: $3300 to A Place for Teens, and $5000 to the L.G. Rec.
Department to work with A Place for Teens in implementing our teen programs
and activities, (The Rec. Dept, had not requested the funds, had no teen
programming, and didn't know what teen programs or activities to implement, so
we worked together to implement our tutoring programs and computer -study
room upgrades and accessibility.) Your extra $5000 that we worked with through
the Rec. Department was a tremendous help to the success of our tutoring/study
room/ computer programs.
This year we requested $8800 from the Town's Community Service
Commission -- the $3300 you granted us last year, the $5000 you granted the Rec.
Dept.'s teen programming, plus an extra $500 for additional activities. (The Rec.
Dept. did not request any funds this year.) The CSC was only able to grant us last
year's amount of $3300, as they said they could not transfer other's funds to us.
However, last year you felt it was important enough to fund healthy teen
programming and activities for a total of $8300. That need is no less today. In
fact, that need is increasing based on the recent police crime data reporting there is
a 47% increase in Los Gatos teen arrests. We are requesting that you grant A
Place for Teens at least the same level of support of $8300 again this year for
teen programming and activities for the teens of our community.
We are trying extremely hard to be self-sufficient financially to fund our
$100,000 annual budget, holding numerous large fund-raisers each year,
establishing an Endowment Fund, and writing many grants to corporations and
foundations. However, this last approach, the grants, is most difficult for us to
receive. The corporations and foundations all tell us what excellent programming
we have, how badly such teen centers are needed across the United States, what
an outstanding project we have developed, etc., but they can not fund us "because
we are located in Los Gatos", Los Gatos is perceived as "too wealthy", and "our
own community should fund us". So, although we are most grateful for all our
community's support and generosity, without your help at least at the level it
was last year, the community's average individual's $25, $50, and $l00
donations are just not enough to fund our budget.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Gladie Rabitz, Board Member and Fundraising Chair
