Item 11 Staff Report Accept Recommendation on Donation of Town Obsolete Computer Equipment and PrintersCOUNCIL AGENDA REPORT DATE: January 7, 2000 TO: MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL FROM: TOWN MANAGER SUBJECT: ACCEPT RECOMMENDATION ON DONATION OF TOWN OBSOLETE COMPUTER 'EQUIPME/4tAND PRINTE- MEETING DATE: 1/18/00 ITEM NO. / RECOMMENDATION: Authorize donation of obsolete computer equipment and printers. DISCUSSION: The Town policy is to auction used equipment which is no longer needed. The Town maintains a contract with a company that performs public auctions on an on -going basis. Currently, the Town is disposing of several old personal computers (PC's) full systems and printers with an estimated value of between $0 and $100 per system. With the reduction in fixed asset value, the obsolete computer units are no longer considered fixed assets. Pursuant to the contract terms, the auctioneer receives 25% of the proceeds of sale. Since April 1995, the Town has donated used personal computers to the Los Gatos -Saratoga High School NOVA program and several non-profit organizations. Rather than sending the obsolete computer items to auction or the landfill, staff recommends that the computer items be given an extended life and that the material be recycled. Further, that the obsolete computer items be donated to local schools, non-profit organizations, youth groups and senior groups. The donation of the computer items will enhance the ability of these organizations to provide services and will directly benefit the citizens of Los Gatos. FISCAL IMPACT None PREPARED BY: JAMES W.
