060198 7 Council Agenda Report Music in the ParkMEETING DATE: 6/1/98 ITEM NO. .."7 COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT DATE: MAY 28, 1998 TO: MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL FROM: TOWN MANAGER SUBJECT: MUSIC IN THE PLAZA (MIP) AUTHORIZE AN INCREASE OF $3,330 FOR THE TWO JUNE MIP CONCERTS, FUNDED BY COMMUNITY DONATIONS RECOMMENDATION: Authorize an increase of $3,330 for the two June MIP concerts, funded by community donations. BACKGROUND: Coordinated jointly by the Town of Los Gatos Arts Commission and Community Services Department, M1P is a summer series of musical concerts held in Town Plaza Park on Sunday afternoons. It is an extremely popular event which has enriched the community and added vitality to the downtown area since 1988. While the concerts are offered free of charge to the community, funds are still required to pay for production costs: performers, sound, stage set-up, clean-up, etc. The Arts Commission and other Town volunteers raise funds for MIP through community contributions and grants. In planning the concerts, the Arts Commission selects musicians who meet the highest quality standards, present a variety of styles, forms, and multi -ethnic and cultural origins, and whenever possible, represent the best of local talent. The summer concerts reflect very positively on the Town's and Commission's commitment to present special programs and activities that inspire artistic and community celebrations. DISCUSSION: The 1998 MIP concert series will start June 21 and run through August 30 (Sunday evenings, 5: 00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.). At this time, eleven concerts are planned, with all but the July 4th concert to be held at Town Plaza Park. The July 4th concert, held on the front lawn of Los Gatos High School, is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The first concert will be June 21, 1998 and is estimated to cost $1,240. The second concert will be June 28, 1998 and is estimated to cost $2,090. The remainder of the series will occur in the next fiscal year and is included in the 1998-99 operating budget. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: This project is not a project defined under CEQA, and no further action is required. FISCAL IMPACT: Increase the expenditure budget for Music in the Plaza (8050-72115) by $3,330, from $13,370 to $16,700. Cost for the 1998 annual series will be tracked in the MIP98 project budget.
