07-07-04 Minutes - HPC110 TOWN OF LOS GATOS 110 East Main Street, Los Gatos, CA 95032 (408) 354-6872 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS FOR JULY 7, 2004, HELD IN THE TOWN COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 110 E MAIN STREET, LOS GATOS, CALIFORNIA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The meeting was called to order at 5:30 P.M. by Chair Pacheco ATTENDANCE Members Present: Susan Burnett, Jeanne Drexel, Len Pacheco and Joanne Talesfore Absent: Kelly Blough Staff Present: Sandy Baily, Associate Planner ITEM 1: 222 TAIT AVENUE The Committee considered plans to modify plans previously approved plan to add a door for property located in the Almond Grove Historic District. Pacheco moved to approve the application subject to the following conditions: 1. The proposed door shall be revised to use a pair of french doors with sidelights. 2. The applicant has the option of providing divided light windows in the dormer. Burnett seconded, motion passed unanimously. Appeal rights were cited. Talesfore arrived ITEM 2: 18 N. SANTA CRUZ AVENUE The matter was continued at the applicants request. ITEM 3: 321 W. MAIN STREET The Committee considered a request for a second story addition to a residence located in the Broadway Historic District. Pacheco moved to continue the matter to a special meeting with the following comments/directions: 1. The original style of the house is a simplified Victorian. 2. The siding is not original and can be removed and replaced with horizontal real wood siding and not classify as a demolition. 3. Remove the shutters. 4. Look at the proportion of the existing windows. Incorporate double hung pairs of windows without the multi-lights. 5. The window treatment shall be consistent. 6. Provide demo plan to ensure the structure does not classify as a demolition. 7. Provide a detail of the proposed bay. 8. Consider adding a belly band. 9. Revise the front porch. Talesfore seconded, motion passed unanimously. ITEM 4: 16810 LOMA STREET The Committee considered a request to demolish a pre-1941 single family residence. Pacheco moved to recommend approval of the demolition to the Development Review Committee. The basis for the recommendation is that: 1. The original structure was not a house. 2. There have been several nonhistoric additions. 3. The structure has no architectural significance. 4. The structure has no character defining features. 5. There is no historic integrity left in the original structure. Drexel seconded, motion passed unanimously. ITEM 5: 221 ALEXANDER AVENUE The Committee considered a request to demolish a pre-1941 single family residence and maintain the historic front elevation to construct a new single family residence. The Committee expressed concern over the demolition of the house. The applicant decided to modify their plans to save the house. The matter was continued to a special meeting to look at the redesign. ITEM 6: 16471 ENGLEWOOD AVENUE The Committee considered a request to demolish a pre-1941 single family residence. Pacheco moved to recommend approval of the application to the Development Review Committee. The basis for the recommendation is that: 1. The house has no historic significance. 2. The house has no character defining features. 3. The original structure has been destroyed by unsympathetic additions. 4. The house is in a deteriorated condition. Drexel seconded, motion passed unanimously. ITEM 7: 104 LOMA ALTA AVENUE The Committee considered a request to demolish a pre-1941 single family residence. Drexel moved to recommend approval of the application to the Development Review Committee. The basis for the recommendation is that: 1. The house has no historic character. 2. The house is not part of an historic streetscape. Drexel seconded, motion passed unanimously. ITEM 8: OTHER BUSINESS a. 47 W. Roberts Rd - The Committee considered preliminary plans to construct a trellis over a second story patio of a pre-1941 single family residence to install solar panels. The Committee recommended that the roof of the trellis be lowered at the rear. The height can be maintained at the front. Continued to the special meeting to further review the trellis design. b. Pre-1941 Design Guidelines - No new information to report. Matter will be continued to each meeting to allow members to add to the list of what needs to looked at when the guidelines are revised. c. Baily shared a letter from Kelly Blough who has resigned from the Committee due to work commitments. ITEM 9: STATUS OF PREVIOUS APPLICATIONS Baily informed the Committee on the status of previous applications. ITEM 10: APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes from the meeting of June 2, 2004 were passed unanimously. ITEM 11: ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 P.M. to a special meeting on July 21, 2004.
