Subject: Removal of Giant Sequoia
Matt,
I was requested by Sean Mullin (planning) to review Walter Levison report concerning tree #26 Giant sequoia next to
proposed Veteran's memorial. Walter 's report reflected that this tree has common fungus Botryospheria sp. I am in
complete agreement that this tree has this pathogen however it has had this for the 28 years that I have been here and
we are managing tree by trimming dead areas every 4 years. Walters concern was that once Memorial was in place that
removal would be problematic but I inspected and am comfortable that removal would still be accomplished safely.
I informed Sean that if the Veterans group would like to remove the tree, they could apply for a permit and we would
support removal. Otherwise we would continue to manage the tree as we have been doing.
Additionally, I have been asked by Matt to comment on the proposed planting of 18 Cherry laurel trees to be planted on
the south side of the serpentine wall and the parking lot. It is my opinion that this area will not support that number of
trees and I recommend between 5 or 7 trees will be sufficient allowing for future growth.
Any questions, let me know.
