A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS ENDORSING S.B. 2040/
A.B. 2603, THE OIL SPILL PREVENTION AND RESPONSE ACT
WHEREAS, the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska and the recent spill in
Huntington Beach have shown the environmental and economic damage a major tanker
accident can cause.
WHEREAS, a major oil spill off the California coast or in San Francisco Bay could
destroy beaches, kill wildlife, halt commercial and sport fishing and impact local economies.
WHEREAS, the Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act seeks to prevent oil spills by
enabling the state to closely monitor the day -to -day operation of tankers and by requiring
each operator of oil- related businesses to have approved oil spill contingency plans.
WHEREAS, the proposed legislation will also enable the state to impose severe fines
and penalties for businesses not prepared for spills.
WHEREAS, the legislation will additionally establish the office of Oil Spill
Prevention and Response to carry out its provisions.
WHEREAS, the legislation will establish a $500 million industry - financed oil spill
prevention and response fund to pay for any cleanup work in the aftermath of an oil spill.
RESOLVED: The Town Council supports the passage of the Oil Spill Prevention
and Response Act by the California legislative and its signing by the Governor.
