1986-159-Opposing The Proposed La Rouche InitiativeRESOLUTION NO. 1986 -159
RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN OF LOS GATOS
OPPOSING THE PROPOSED LA ROUCHE INITIATIVE
WHEREAS, AIDS is a devastating disease that has stricken many; and
WHEREAS, AIDS is spread only by intimate sexual activity or by
infected blood, not by casual contact; and
WHEREAS it is universally known that the best way to stop the spread
of AIDS is through public outreach and education; and
WHEREAS, instead of supporting a massive public education campaign,
the proposed La Rouche Initiative requires mandatory
reporting, isolation, and quarantine of people suspected of
having or carrying the AIDS virus as the way to end the AIDS
crisis; and
WHEREAS, the actions set forth by the proposed La Rouche Initiative
will not lead to ending the AIDS crisis, but will cause
greater suffering for people suspected of having or carrying
the AIDS virus and calls for discrimination in employment,
housing, education, insurance and health care; and
WHEREAS, such a public policy is a violation of basic human rights.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town of Los Gatos opposes the
proposed La Rouche Initiative, and denounces the measure in the strongest
possible terms.
