A RESOLUTION COMMENDING ED BURKE
WHEREAS, ED BURKE, long -time Los Gatos resident and owner of the popular Los
Gatos Athletic Club, will be representing the United States in the
1984 Olympic Games (hammerthrow division); and
WHEREAS, ED began training for the 1984 Olympics in 1979, more than ten years
after competing in the 1968 Games in Mexico City and the 1964 Olympics
in Tokyo; and
WHEREAS, ED set both the World and American record in 1967 with a hammerthrow
of 235' -11" (which stood until 1980); and
WHEREAS, ED, at the age of 44, successfully qualified at the Olympic Trials
after five years of training, which was intensified by the fact that
the athletic world was watching the performance of this 'elder states-
man' with unflagging interest; and
WHEREAS, ED's comeback performance resulted in his third -place finish at the
trials, giving him one of the three berths on the Olympic hammerthrow
team; and
WHEREAS, ED continues to provide inspiration to professional and 'weekend'
athletes alike attempting to further the cause of physical fitness
throughout the United States;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos
does hereby commend ED BURKE for his outstanding determination and performance
in the 1984 Olympic Trials; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council wishes ED the success, satisfaction,
and sense of achievement he so richly deserves in his bid for a medal at the
1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.

a regular meeting held this l6th day of July 1984,
